Offside Thursday/ Stars not shining

I was going to write my article on Monday, but the Kings embarrassed the hell out of us. I had to have my cool-off period. That lasted until today.

There are three times that I have cried at a hockey game. The first time is when we won our first cup, the second time was when we won our second cup. The third was was on Friday night. But seriously folks, most of our team should be fresh this weekend since they played like 20 minutes out of 120 minutes last weekend.

What a terrible way to start the season. Getting spanked 10-1 on Friday to the Bugs was just pathetic. Saturday we played a bit better. Let me re-phrase that – a lot better – losing 2-1 to the Bugs.

Buying into Killer’s system: they wouldn’t last year and it looks like the stars are still struggling to buy into the way he wants them to play. Trying to take shortcuts with and without the puck, the individualistic attempts were all too evident on the ice in the season opener in Mudbug country.

They were lazy. They certainly have to work harder than they did Friday and Saturday if they want to go anywhere this year.

It seems that everybody is on their own program. It’s never good when everyone is on a different page. It’s going to be a long season if they don’t figure things out soon. Saturday’s home-opener against the Mudbugs may be just Game 2 of 65 this season, but the bad habits from a year ago have carried over.

I’m not happy about the way the Kings played and either are 5,326 fans that showed up Saturday. The players shouldn’t be happy about it either. I’m sure the players weren’t happy with the weekend, but they’re the only ones who can do something about it. It starts with the stars. Richards, JC. Dumont and Landmesser.

Those four couldn’t muster up any offence, mostly because they didn’t play smart. The effort was not there. They weren’t really focused. They just didn’t come ready to play. Mentally, they were in la-la land.

We need everyone playing. We can’t just have certain guys going out there and doing what they need to do and others not playing up to their potential. Last weekend’s play should be a wake-up call for everyone on the team.

There’s time to rectify the problem, but it will take commitment. For some, the first step is admitting there’s a problem. That even includes the coach.

We didn’t compete hard in any areas. Defensively, the team was terrible. Not playing smart with the puck. Playing even worse without it.

Improved special teams is something the Kings are counting on.

Friday night, for one game at least, the (anything but) special teams took a step backwards.

POWERPLAYS Mississippi 1 for 7 : Bossier-Shreveport 4 for 9

The parade to the penalty box also prevented the Kings from generating any kind of flow. The guys who play the PK get tired. The guys who don’t can’t get in a rhythm.

Giving up four powerplay goals is bad enough. But giving up three shorthanded goals is a big no-no.

I know it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Technically, there’s plenty of time, but boys you have to get it together quickly or you’ll be behind the eight ball again.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

Offside Thursday…

Welcome to Offside Thursday…let’s have some fun !!

There was a bit of a mix-up in Philadelphia this week when PETA protesters stormed the Eagles practice field. They heard Michael Vick was working on pooch kicks.

After the first few episodes of the Amazing Race, my wife is pulling for pro beach volleyballers Katie Seamon and Rachel Johnson to be the first female team to win it all. Meanwhile, I’m just pleased they had a pair of good legs.

The Giants beat the Braves in round one of the MLB playoffs ending Bobby Cox’s hopes of retiring with another championship. When Paris Hilton heard about Cox coming up short she said, ‘I hate it when that happens.’

Police in Kazakhstan say they are banning nasvai, a common form of chewing tobacco blended with chicken droppings. I’m not sure if this particular chaw is popular in MLB dugouts, but it would explain the fowl language.

BjornBorg.com is inviting visitors to send a photo of themselves in Borg’s name brand underwear and if your pic gets more online votes than anyone else’s, you win your weight in skivvies. I wonder what my over/under is on that?

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was in sidestepping mode Wednesday when asked about the National Football League’s ongoing investigation into his conduct two years ago.

Great. Fox is going for the ‘we’re being honest about not paying the Korean people who draw the show a decent living wage’ dollar. That’s a brilliant marketing strategy in these dire economic times. They never miss a beat.”

Suave Smile

YouTube user yaaba3dhoom doesn’t need fancy production or editing skills to showcase his talent. He’s all natural. This clever video reveals something truly amazing about a ‘look’. It has the ability to make people smile and make others feel uncomfortable. Regardless, this look has been perfected thoroughly.

Late night with Jimmy Fallon

There’s talk of turning the whole Chilean miners story into a movie. When he heard about it, Roman Polanski was like,”You had me at minors”.

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. ‘Careful,’ he said, ‘CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once.

TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking!

Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the Salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!’ The wife stared at him. ‘What in the world is wrong with you?

You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?’ The husband calmly replied, ‘I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.’
