Final tune-up: Tigers 75, Christian Brothers 49

With the season opener just a few days away, there was no way the Tigers could keep Jelan Kendrick on the bench.

After meeting and exceeding what Memphis coach Josh Pastner said were a series of objectives, Kendrick saw his first playing time as a Tiger in a 75-49 exhibition win over Christian Brothers on Tuesday night. Though his stat line was inconsequential, Kendrick’s presence in the lineup meant the uber-talented Tigers are one step closer to being at full strength for the start of the regular season Friday against Centenary.

“I’ve always said that when something you love gets taken away, sometimes it gives you another perspective,” Pastner said. “Sometimes that light goes off.”

Kendrick, who’d missed two weeks of practice dealing with a “personal matter,” was allowed to return to practice this week, but sat out the first preseason game Nov. 3. The McDonald’s All-American logged 15 minutes Tuesday, finishing 4-of-8 from the field with eight points, two rebounds and two assists.

“There are certain situations in life you have to learn from and continue to grow,” Kendrick said. “I have totally different mindset now. I’ve set a new standard for myself.”

Figuring out the rotation

Memphis’ offense hasn’t looked very fluid in either of its preseason games, and some of that is Pastner’s fault. With so many players deserving of time, it’s a better problem to have than most. But that doesn’t make it any less difficult.

The only two players not to see any time Tuesday were Tarik Black and Will Barton —- both out with minor injuries. Six players had eight points or more. The leading scorer? Freshman backup point guard Antonio Barton.

“During a timeout, I told our assistants that I probably did a poor job by not letting us get in a rhythm because I was subbing so much,” Pastner said. “That was the case both preseason games, but that won’t be the case from here forward.”

Though he is intent on tightening the rotation, Pastner said he still isn’t sure exactly how he’ll do it. Well, he sort of said it like that. You’ve got to see the full quote:

“I’m not any closer to knowing how I’ll tighten up the rotation,” Pastner said. “I wish I could play everyone 40 minutes, but gosh darn it, Dr. James Nasmith invented a game with only five guys on the court at a time. … Our guys are going to have to understand that.”

Hustle points

• Charles Carmouche had a big game offensively against Lemoyne-Owen, and he followed it up with a big game defensively against Christian Brothers. He had five of the Tigers’ 11 steals.

• Exhibition game or not, the Tigers held CBU to 5-of-25 (20 percent) shooting from the 3-point line. They played well defensively overall, forcing 18 turnovers and holding the Bucs to 33.9 shooting from the field.

• Witherspoon had another night of showing why he’s an NBA talent. He drove baseline, elevated and dunked. He grabbed nine boards. He even added a block and a steal.

Barton ready for Friday?

Will Barton hasn’t seen the court since injuring his knee and ankle in practice Oct. 22. Though he said after the exhibition Tuesday that he’d be ready for Centenary on Friday, his coach wasn’t so quick to make the same promise.

“I don’t know (if he’ll play),” Pastner said. “I’ve got to talk to your staff. We have a day off (Wednesday), practice Thursday and then we’ll see what he does then. I’m not going to put him in a position where he could get hurt any further.”

Kings win two in a row, It’s Gameday

The Kings finally have two games they can be proud of. The Kings skated away with a 60-minute effort Friday at the DCC,dropping the Mudbugs 4-3.

Almost everything went right for the Kings on Friday night. They got strong goaltending from Larry Sterling, who made 22-saves. Derek Landmesser scored the game winner with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Matt Boyd, Louis Dumont, and Chris Richards (PPG) also scored goals in the game.

The Kings were 1-for-3 on the powerplay and the Mudbugs were 3-for-10.

Referee Lavoie called a terrible game and I mean terrible. The rules are never the same from game to game.

Mississippi outshot Bossier-Shreveport 27-25.

Saturday night the Kings won their second game in a row. The Kings set the tone early with a strong first period, outshooting Tulsa 15-11.

They managed two goals, when Russell Smith scored on the powerplay and Richards scored on the powerplay also. It was 2-0 after one.

Michel Beausoleil had the lone goal in the second period for Tulsa. It was 2-1 Kings after forty minutes of play.

Matt Miller and Darrell Stoddard netted goals in the third period for the Kings. The final was 4-1.

Sterling (3-2-0) again played well between the pipes as he stopped 34 of 35 shots directed his way. The Kings were 2-for-5 on the power play. Tulsa was 0-for-7.

The Kings continued to shine on special teams. Allowing only 4 goals on 17 attempts this weekend.

That was a solid four point weekend.

We do have to stop taking so many stupid penalties though, that will catch up to us.

The Kings are the most penalized team in the CHL with a total of 392 penalty minutes for an average of 49.00 PIMS per game. That’s way too many penalty minutes in a game.

Tonight the Evansville Icemen visit the DCC,with a record of 3-4-1 for seven points and eighth place in the Turner Conference. The Icemen are 1-4-0 on the road with their only victory on the road was against, you guessed it, the RiverKings. They played on October 22nd at the DCC and walked away with a 5-2 win over the Kings.

Tonight’s game will be on Sports 56, WHBQ-AM (560), the pre-game show goes at 6:50pm with the drop of the puck at 7:05 pm.

Around the NHL…

The bad news: The Hockey Hall of Fame voters screwed up by omitting Joe Nieuwendyk and Doug Gilmour this year. The good news: Ed Belfour is the only newly-eligible shoe-in for next year, meaning the voters can still slip both aforementioned stars in.

They’d better do it then though as the class of 2012 includes Joe Sakic, Brendan Shanahan, Mats Sundin, Curtis Joseph and Jeremy Roenick. A year later, it’s Scott Niedermayer, Chris Chelios and Rob Blake …

How’s this for a bad night? Vancouver’s Guillaume Desbians gets exactly two seconds of ice time in a game against Colorado last week before a fight with Cody McLeod nets him a broken right hand that will keep him out of action indefinitely …

If Dion Phaneuf is indeed out six weeks due to his leg injury, that means his targeted return coincides with the day his Leafs make their first appearance in Calgary since he was traded to Toronto …

Separated at birth: Actor Gary Sinise and Dino Ciccarelli.

That’s it for today. I’ll see you at the game tonight. The Kings better keep it going.

I’m Joe Sports, have a great day.
