I Hate Mondays: Riverkings Win on the Road

Tell me why? I don’t like Mondays. Tell me why?

Today has been very busy at work although Mondays always are. I am at my desk now and it is covered in the usual Monday rubbish. On a high note, the Kings got a split this weekend, that helps the Monday blues.

We’ve been playing one on, one off. two off and sometimes not even a whole game.

Saturday, we played 40 minutes of good hockey. The Kings are still trying to find their identity. In the first period on Saturday night in Evansville, the IceMen scored first, Brian Bicek found the twine behind Kings netminder Pechurskiy. It was 1-0 Ice Men after one.

What was said between periods is anybody’s guess, but the Kings came out in the second and dominated the play. They outshot the IceMen 20-8. Kings Nathan Lutz scored on the powerplay at 8:26 to tie the game. Then Marshall scored at 13:22. Both goals were assisted by Christian and Richards. It was 2-1 after forty minutes of play.

The third period was tight, but Dumont put the icing on the cake with an empty-netter with 29 seconds remaining. The final 3-1 Kings.

Pechurskiy stopped 25 of 26 shots in the game. IceMen netminder stopped 28 of 31 shots directed his way. Mississippi moved to 6-8-0 for the season and stopped a two-game losing streak. The IceMen fell to 7-6-1 with the loss.

The Kings out shot the IceMen 31-26.

The Kings powerplay was terrible once again and as I have said a million times, if we don’t get that going we are in big trouble. Mississippi was 1-for-8 on the power play. Evansville was 0-for-6.

The RiverKings are still on the road, they play Wednesday night in Wichita. Turkey day they are in Tulsa. Next home game is November 27th. The Laredo Bucks will be in town.

Joe Sports thoughts…

If the Kings are going to go anywhere this season, they have to find a way to play consistently every game, get more contributions offensively and get timely saves from Pechurskiy.

That didn’t happen enough in October and the first two weeks of November.

There is cause for concern. I would say some trades should be made, before it’s too late.

The powerplay is not a powerplay. It should be better and that’s an area where coach Kevin Kaminski needs to find answers.

The Kings have to find answers and stay focused. Mentally, some of the breakdowns, there’s no excuse for it.

The Kings are not playing to their potential.

Saturday there were signs of playing well, that’s encouraging. But there’s also signs where we’re not giving a 100%.

Is this a make-or-break-trip?

No, I don’t think so. But as I have said, we have to start getting it together sooner than later.

The Kings have just two wins in their last six outings. But they should have an extra spring in their collective step after beating the IceMen. Now, put Saturday’s game in the rear-view mirror and build off it.

After all, nobody’s going to bow their heads because the Kings beat the IceMen. Beating the IceMen was simply a step in the right direction.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.
