Offside Thursday: Kings Glad October is over!!

There’s a wonderful anecdote involving legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, miffed at how his players had been performing of late, beginning a team meeting by holding up an official NFL pigskin with exaggerated flourish. “Gentlemen,” announced Lombardi archly, “THIS is a football.” From the back of the room, wide receiver and merry prankster Max Mc-Gee piped up: “Can you slow down, coach? You’re going too fast.” Kevin Kaminski can relate to ol’ Vince. I think it’s time to go back to Square 1. This is a puck and we must start scoring !!

We did split two games this last weekend.

Friday Night.

Last Friday, the Kings beat up on the Mavericks. It was a blood battle folks. 300 penalty minutes between the teams. I guess they just don’t like each other. The Kings beat the Mavericks 5-2. Kyle McNulty (1-1-0) won his first game of the season in goal for the Kings. He stopped 21 of 23 shots directed his way.

Goal scorers for the Kings were Russell Smith, Louis Dumont, Matt Summers, Nathan Lutz, and Derek Landmesser. Darrell Stoddard and Matt Boyd each added a pair of assists.

Yes the Kings won this one, but I thought they stole this one away from the Mavericks. We didn’t play good hockey on Friday. We were 1 for 9 on the powerplay. Yuk, that’s terrible.

The Mavericks netmainder Festa was just horrible between the pipes. He had an off night and we were lucky the Kings could capitilize. He stopped 25 of 29 shots directed his way. We were lucky and I’ll take the two points. I’m not happy with the way the game ended with all that B.S. at the end of the game.

Take a look at the penalties in the third period.

Saturday

The Bees Juliano Pagliero’s made 40 saves as the Killer Bees blanked the RiverKings 2-0, at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. The Kings are now 2-4-0 for the season. . And again we were pathetic, terrible and just lousy on the powerplay, 0-for-6, do I have to say more?

Kyle McNulty stopped 35 of 37 shots directed his way. Don’t blame Kyle for this one.

Traditionally, when the season’s opening month is in the book and the Halloween decorations are put away, Kings fans are looking forward to a great season of hockey. But the way the Kings have started out( 2-4-0 ) it doesn’t look too good.

Performance in November is going to be crucial for the turtles. The Kings had a terrible October. This upcoming month, the criticisms and trade talk will grow louder if the Kings can’t get on track.

Again, the other night (Saturday)we weren’t a smart team. We have been hearing the same line from the Captain, players and coaching staff for some time now including most of last year. “It will get better” Yet wanting to be better and making the claim that it will arn’t always enough. I love the Kings, ever since they came to the Memphis area. Remember when the Kings were the team to beat. It’s time to return to that dominance but, keeping some of the older guys on the roster will not get us to our goal”The Presidents Cup”.

We will slide further if we don’t do something quickly. Some of our older players would be a great addition to other teams.Lets get value while we can. After Saturday’s performance I hope Kaminski peeled the paint off the walls when speaking to his team. Maybe it’s not the players, maybe it’s Killer himself ?

Killer has to make it clear he won’t be shy about shipping underperformers out of town. Here’s the standings as of today.

Who does it start with?

The leaders on this team(vets) have to step up.And if they do it, the young guys will pick up some slack as well. We need to win hockey games. We have to get to the front of the net. We’re not paying the price. We’ve got enough skill and talent on this team. There should be enough determination to will some pucks into the other team’s net.

If we want to win, we have to play a high-tempo game. I’m sure Kaminski has said this is not the way he wants them to play. He wants them to be a very hard-working, committed hockey team and stay with the program, stay with the structure throughout the whole game. Not just for a period or a couple of shifts, it’s got to be consistent every night.

It’s an older team, but hey, they don’t have to play like it. This is not a rebuilding year. There is no re-building in the CHL. EVERYONE HAS A ONE YEAR CONTRACT!!

After a topsy-turvy 2-4 October, November shapes up as nothing less than a polygraph test for the Kings — seven games are on the road, including a murderous six -games on the road in December.Oh, add one more, the Mudbugs on January 1,2011.( A possible 28 points on the road)

I don’t think frustration is the word. I think it’s the realization that we still need to get some work done here. We want to be a 60-65 minute team, but to be able to do that we have to make sure we’re playing with consistency throughout the night.

I’m not trying to paint a picture of gloom and doom. Let’s do something about it, instead of the players and coach feeling sorry for themselves. It’s not like we’re dealing with a group of 16-year-old hockey players.

I mean, we’ve got a veteran team. They all understand the situation and what has transpired. Now it’s just fixing it,dealing with issues and trying to correct them.

They’re pretty smart guys. It has nothing to do with confidence, it has everything to do with keeping their focus. They have to resolve things. Whether it’s with the coach or maybe there’s are too many chiefs on this squad.

The Kings have not found the spark that they need. But they can’t keep sleepwalking through games.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

What’s up this weekend.

The Mudbugs are in town on Friday and Tulsa are here Saturday. Both weekend games for the Kings will be on WPGF-FM 87.7 FM “The Pig.” The Pre-game show begins at 6:50pm with the voice of the RiverKings Bob Bakken. Both games will also be on CHL-TV.

Offside Thursday…

Welcome to Offside Thursday…let’s have some fun !!

Sister Virginia Muller told the Associated Press it’s mind-boggling she and the Baltimore-based School Sisters of Notre Dame were given a century-old Honus Wagner baseball card that may fetch $200,000 at auction. Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

November is the month when professional football, basketball and hockey are all being televised. It’s hard to say who loves this time of year more: sports lovers or divorce lawyers.

The Edmonton Oilers plan to be first Canadian NHL team to have cheerleaders. They face three recent challenges: 3. Opposition from hockey traditionalists; 2. The NoCheer online petition; 1. Finding something to cheer about.

A lot of sports pundits think Cliff Lee will end up in New York next season pitching for the Yankees. After the recent ALCS, I’m thinking his wife won’t want to come within spitting distance.

From Dwight Perryof the Seattle Times: “Have you seen Army’s spiffy camouflage football uniforms, helmets and all? Referees suspect the Cadets might have too many men on the field, but say it’s too tough to tell.

Well, think about this!

Let’s put the seniors in jail, and the criminals in a nursing home. This way the seniors would have access to showers, hobbies, and walks, they’d receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs etc.

They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly, if they fell, or needed assistance. Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them. A guard would check on them every 20 minutes, and bring their meals and snacks to their cell. They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.

They would have access to a library, weight room, spiritual counseling, pool, and education, simple clothing, shoes, slippers, PJ’s and legal aid would be free, on request. Private, secure rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard, with gardens.

Each senior could have a PC, TV, Radio, and daily phone calls. There would be a board of directors, to hear complaints, and the guards/nurses would have a code of conduct, that would be strictly adhered too.

The “criminals,” on the other hand, would get cold food, be left all alone, and unsupervised. Lights off at 8pm, and showers once a week. Live in a tiny room, and pay $5000.00 per month and have no hope of ever getting out.

Hmmmmmmmmm kinda’ makes you stop and think doesn’t it??????
