First to 100: Grizz squash Hornets 111-89 on Fan Appreciation Night

O.J. Mayo poses with fans following an 18-point explosion on fan appreciation night.

I think it was Elton John who said it best: “The bench is back.”

On fan appreciation night, O.J. Mayo, Shane Battier, Darrell Arthur, Greivis Vasquez and Hamed Haddadi made sure the fans felt appreciated by running away from the Hornets in the third and fourth quarters.

The bench contributed 61 of the Grizzlies 111 points while putting together an explosive rout with very little second-half help from the starters.

About 17,000 fans showed up for this final game of the regular season. Before the game a video recap of Friday’s playoff-clinching win against Sacramento was shown, and owner Michael Heisley addressed the crowd.

After the game the Grizzlies players participated in the annual “jersey off the back” ceremony, with each player giving a signed jersey to a selected season-ticket holder.

The scoring explosion had the crowd on their feet at the close of the third quarter, through most of the fourth quarter, and by the end of the game every active Grizzly in uniform had grabbed some points. The Grizzly bench managed to put the game away as early as with nine minutes to go. Meanwhile, for the first time in his career, star Hornets point guard Chris Paul did not score in the game.

The Grizzlies have two games left in the season, both away. The team will return to FedExForum for first round playoff action, dates times and opponents TBA.

First to 100 is a new feature for that will appear after every Grizzlies home game. 100 or so words of the best stuff from that night’s action.
