2011 M Awards: Best Musical Performance

“I can feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord
I’ve been waiting for this moment, all my life, Oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, Oh Lord, Oh Lord”

Music makes the world go ’round. Not necessarily Phil Collins music, but music nonetheless. And Memphis being a city known for music, we fully expect that this new M Awards category, will be a highly contested battle year in and year out from now on. But this year Memphis rap dominates the awards with a first and third place finish – Yo Gotti at a Tigers event and Al Kapone at a Grizzlies event. The fact that Yo Gotti won this so handily should partially explain why the award for Best Annual event was so easily won by Memphis Madness (or maybe the fact that Yo Gotti appeared at Memphis Madness won this award for him.) I choose to think that Memphis Madness and Yo Gotti are both fantastic and their pairing shot the voting through the roof.

Yo Gotti at Memphis MadnessFirst Place: 34.75%
Rick Trotter singing National Anthem at Grizz gameSecond Place: 20.66%
Al Kapone and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra at Grizzlies Opening NightThird Place: 11.80%
Best Write-in Vote: No good music this year step it up MEMPHIS

So what do you think, Memphis? Was this the Best Musical Performance? Did my introduction of Phil Collins’ lyrics get your blood flowing? Or did it leave you wondering what is wrong with me?
