Back in 1993, Memphis-based USWA had a working relationship with the (then known as) WWF. This relationship would eventually evolve into today’s developmental system of World Wrestling Entertainment.
In this week’s Throwback Thursday, the undefeated WWF Superstar Tatanka was brought into the USWA by Vince McMahon to defeat Jerry “The King” Lawler and capture the USWA Championship.
And that’s exactly what he did.
The show opens with the news that Tatanka has defeated Jerry Lawler for the USWA Unified Championship. Vince sends in an interview gloating about the victory while wearing the USWA Championship belt.
The WWF had never made it a habit of acknowledging that other wrestling promotions even existed. Now, you have McMahon himself showing up on Memphis TV with their coveted Unified Championship.
Watch the clip, as Dave Brown informs us of the news and pitches to the Vince McMahon interview.
FUN FACT: The photo of Vince McMahon with “horns” hangs inside the offices of Florida Championship Wrestling, WWE’s developmental system.
