Throwback Thursday: Jerry Lawler vs Ric Flair for World Heavyweight Title

Lawler v FlairOn September 30, 1985, Jerry “The King” Lawler and “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair drew a record gate ($95,000-plus) at the Mid-South Coliseum, with nearly 9,500 fans paying the highest tickets prices in the history of Memphis wrestling ($8, $15 and $25).  This week’s Throwback Thursday clip will set the stage for that incredible showdown.

Let’s turn back the clock to 1982.  The Memphis-based USWA was live inside WMC-TV5 studios where an impromptu World Heavyweight Championship bout pitted Southern Heavyweight Champion Jerry Lawler against NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair.  This match took place three years before the Mid-South Coliseum showdown in 1985 and set the stage for the epic battle to come.

Jerry Lawler had vowed to win a World Championship.  Watch the clip to find out if he won it from “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair.

Fun Fact:  The King and the Nature Boy wouldn’t lock up again until the 1993 WWF Royal Rumble.  Both men are now WWE Hall of Famers.
