Throwback Thursday: Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart vs Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler, a personal rivalry

SummerSlam_1993_-_Bret_Hart_Vs_Jerry_Lawler_03Fresh off the announcement that Bret “Hitman” Hart will be joining MSL for an exclusive interview on Sunday, November 17 (5:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Sports 56 WHBQ/87.7 FM), what better way to celebrate Throwback Thursday then to take a look back at The Excellence of Execution’s history in Memphis?

Wrestling fans all over the world remember the epic six-year feud between Jerry “The King” Lawler & Bret “Hitman” Hart.  Back on June 13, 1993 Bret Hart was crowned WWF King of the Ring by defeating the late Bam Bam Bigelow in the Finals of the tournament.  One man in particular took offense to such a title being given & immediately attacked The Hitman during his coronation ceremony.  After all, Jerry Lawler had been The King in Memphis for many years.

That attack was the beginning of a feud that quickly became personal.

Lawler was mean, nasty & downright disrespectful to not only the Hitman but to his family as well.  Lawler attacked Bret’s brother Owen, sent henchmen after Bret & even resorted to verbally attacking Bret’s parents!

Bret Hart versus Jerry Lawler was one of the most unique rivalries we have ever witnessed.  What started as a battle between two Kings in the  WWF quickly spilled over into the Memphis-based USWA – Lawler’s hometown.  In the WWF, Bret was seen as a good guy (or babyface), while Lawler was a bad guy (or heel).  But while wrestling in Memphis, the roles were reversed.

In this weeks’ Throwback Thursday clip, we rewind to the February 10th, 1996 episode of USWA.  We start out with an interview from Bret Hart and highlights from a match at the Mid-South Coliseum.  Bret discusses bringing his tag team partner The Undertaker to face the combination of Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett at St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.  Lance Russell is standing by with Jerry Lawler, who not only has an answer for Bret but a history lesson as well.

Bret Hart’s nasty comments towards Lawler were a complete role-reversal from his WWF character.  At the time, Bret was the current WWF Champion and one of the most popular Superstars on the roster.  The King, on the other hand, responded in typical Memphis-fashion – “You don’t want to face the Memphis Tigers in the Tomb of Doom… and you don’t want to face The King at the Mid-South Coliseum!”

Fun Facts:  At the peak of their feud, Jerry Lawler & Bret Hart wrestled in a Kiss My Foot Match at the 1995 King of the Ring.  It didn’t end well for Lawler.

Bret Hart will join MemphiSport Live (MSL) for an exclusive interview on Sports 56 & 87.7 FM on Sunday, November 17th.  The special Sunday edition of MSL will air from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  The Hitman will be discussing his time in Memphis, feuding with Jerry Lawler & his return to the Mid-South on November 30th, 2013 in Humboldt, TN at Humboldt Middle School.  For ticket information, go to
