Memphis showcased at WrestleMania

Memphis Wrestling alumni have been showcased in the Main Event of WrestleMania for many, many years.  The list includes legendary superstars like Mick Foley, Ultimate Warrior, Stone Cold Steve Austin and even The Rock.  Only the best of the best can be top bill on the grandest stage of them all.

“Macho Man” Randy Savage  headlined WrestleMania IV & V.  I’ll never forget the WrestleMania V cover art on the old VHS tape.  I thought Savage’s bicep was going to explode! Of course, Randy Savage debuted in Memphis in 1983 by smashing a picture frame over his own head.

The legendary 21-0 undefeated streak is owned by a former Memphis wrestler.  You may know him as The Undertaker.  We knew him as Master of Pain.  The Undertaker was featured in a Memphis-only WrestleMania Main Event.  Two of the biggest men USWA had ever seen – Sid Vicious and Master of Pain.  At WrestleMania 13, the two did battle for the WWE Championship.

The Rock, who was known in USWA as Flex Kavana, has headlined more WrestleManias than any other Memphis alum.  He has been at the big dance five times, including the last two years in a row.  Also, on two different occasions, Austin and Rock shared the Main Event together.

Sunday night at WrestleMania XXX, Memphis will showcase another talent.  At Memphis Championship Wrestling, he was known as “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson. Fifteen years later, he will presumably be added to the World Heavyweight Championship match in the Main Event of WrestleMania.  Do I think he will walk away with the World Title?

Fun Facts:  On nine occasions former Memphis wrestlers have been victorious in the Main Event of WrestleMania.  Fourteen WrestleManias have been headlined by former Memphis wrestlers.  There have been five Memphis-only Main Events.
