When Kim Leaks-Williams and Roderick Williams first crossed paths at work in June 2005, she admittedly came across as being somewhat “difficult.”
Still, her reserved and disengaged demeanor didn’t deter Roderick from steadfastly pursuing her.
To Roderick’s credit, he finally caught his big break when Kim began to partake in regular dialogues with him.
The fact that he’s an avid Green Bay Packers fan had nothing to do with it.
“We would talk endlessly about everything and nothing,” Kim told MemphiSport in its salute to Super Dads. “Our ideas about God, parenting and life in general were strikingly cohesive. It was if we were one from the very beginning. I was difficult at first, but he stayed the course and won my heart by simply being himself. Meeting me where I was in life at that time, he loved me in spite of whatever.”
Today, Kim describes Roderick, her husband, as a “best friend” who has taught her virtually everything about sports, most notably football.
Never mind that she isn’t totally sold on the Packers.
“I truly believe he prefers me over the Packers, though, because all the signs are dancing in my favor,” Kim joking said of her husband. “Rod has taught me everything I know about football. He is the first man to genuinely show interest in me knowing what he knows about this sport. What really melts my heart is how Rod has taught our oldest son to love the game just as much as he does. He spends time with him like any effective parent would, often going beyond great lengths, like the year he coached the little league team to help build out sons confidence in his own abilities at the sport.”
According to Kim, it is Rod’s commitment as a devoted father — and his love for the Packers — that essentially have given way to what she describes as a solid, lasting marriage.
It is, she said, because of Rod’s commitment as a father that she felt compelled to pay homage to him as a Super Dad.
“From the day we journeyed on our first date, I’ve wondered was this real,” Kim explained. “I wondered, ‘Could our relationship work?’ Is there a happily ever after for us?’ Every time we pray together as a family, the resounding yes echoes deep within and my heart smiles in unison. (Rod) is a poetry in motion for us and we love him with every fiber of our beings. Happy Fathers Day to the constant in our lives. Roderick R. Williams, thank you for being consistently wondrous to us. You’re the example for our sons, the standard for our daughters, and we love you more with each passing day.”
So much for being somewhat “difficult” nine years ago.
