Whitehaven High alum Shun McCoy ‘breaking necks’ through her new clothing line

ATLANTA — Shun McCoy doesn’t just want to turn heads.

McCoyShe wants to break necks.

Figuratively, of course.

The owner and chief operating officer of the Atlanta-based Hymz and Hyrz® Personal Styling and Boutique, McCoy’s online business specializes largely in clothing and apparel for plus-size women or, as this Chicago native says, for “all curvy women.”

To her credit, it’s safe to assume that plus-size — er, curvy women — from various walks of life have greatly embraced what undoubtedly is emerging as an up-and-coming clothing line, a trend that given its considerable progress in recent months, figures to become a fixture in the foreseeable future.

“I love to see the smiles on people’s faces when they put on Hymz and Hyrz®,” McCoy, a former Memphian and Whitehaven High graduate told longtime journalist Andre Johnson during a recent interview.

As if her unique, flourishing clothing line isn’t enough to turn heads — er, breaks necks —

TREND SETTER --- Upon starting her online clothing line in March 2014, McCoy worked mostly behind the scenes, but ultimately launched her second business venture approximately eight months later.

Hymz and Hyrz® newfound mission essentially has a catchy, plus-size touch to it, or sorts.

“(We aspire) to give curvy women trendy-plus-size clothing to look and feel good in,” McCoy explained. “To be able to have cute options besides flowers and prints.”

Because after all, as McCoy swiftly points out, “curvy women slay too.”

McCoy2As for Hymz and Hyrz®, McCoy was inspired by members of her family to launch her online business.

“Some of the women in my family are a little thicker than a snicker,” McCoy said with a grin, “but they’re always dressed well and size appropriate.”

And then there are the prominent thicker-than-a-Snicker celebrities who have greatly fueled McCoy’s desire to broaden her horizon.

“(Renowned R & B singer) Jill Scott is always eye-catching and styled to perfection,” McCoy said. “When you look good, you feel good. Also to show curvy women that there is fashionable size appropriate clothing that we can look good in.”

Besides owning two fledging businesses, McCoy has an Associate’s Degree in Medical Administration and is credited for having completed two years of Nursing School at Baptist College of Nursing in Memphis. Consequently, she earned her licensing as a Board Certified Estitician and Nail Technician from International School of Skin and Nails before the Chicago native mastered McDonald’s Management program through Hamburger University in Oakbrook, Illinois.

Looking ahead, McCoy, a devout Christian who is passionate about spreading the gospel through her entrepreneurial endeavors, is confident her best days as a rising business owner are well ahead of her.

That’s because she doesn’t just want to turn heads.

She wants to break necks.

Figuratively, of course.
