As far as distractions go, the best possible way to fend them off is to first admit that you are faced with them.
Luckily for Latoya Chandler, it seems she’s never shied away from acknowledging the frequent distractions that have come her way.
Take, for instance, how Chandler earlier this week recalled life as a single parent of five children.
There she was, being as forthright and direct as she possibly can about a trend seems all too familiar in inner city communities throughout this country.
“I allowed my life as a single mother to become a distraction for me and therefore, I never completed,” Chandler, in during a recent interview with longtime journalist Andre Johnson, said when assessing her educational background. “I’ve started college and never completed it. I’ve started over so many times and never completed it.”
In fact, things had become so brutally challenging for Chandler that the only thing about which she sensed she was successful at was routinely living beneath her priviledges, a trend she felt would fill the array of voids that often emerged in her life.
“I used to beat myself up and say the only thing that I felt I was good at was having kids,” Chandler said with a straight face. “Because it was the only thing I felt I completed and mastered successfully.”
After spending an ample amount of time soul-searching and, most importantly, reconnecting with the vision and divine purpose for which God created her, Chandler ultimately had adopted a newfound disposition on life.
Even as a single parent of five children, she had come to a realization that there is so much more to life than by becoming impregnated.
In other words, even as single parent who undoubtedly has endured her share of hardships and trials and tribulations, Chandler was determined not to become just another single parent statistic in the inner city.
Instead, she sought and consulted Almighty God unlike like never before only to savor and possess the abundant life Christ came to give her.
Unlike never before.
A native of Mount Vernon, New York, Chandler currently works as executive assistant for a local non-profit organization.
As if that’s not enough to give her a new outlook on life, Chandler also is an accomplished author.
Chandler is founder and owner of Passion Publications, LLC in which her notable published work is a torn series that is a trilogy of sex, lies, betrayal and infidelity.
“Everyday people have secrets that are so explosive that they’ll leave your mouth open, heart panting and wanting more of this romantic thriller,” Chandler explains. “My love for literature inspires my passion for the business.”
A former prep basketball standout, Chandler said her past sports experiences greatly fueled her desire to demonstrate a sense of competitiveness in this ever-so-popular authorship industry.
Fortunately for Chandler, she’s steadily finding her niche as a seasoned writer, this silencing her critics and naysayers in the process.
Boy, has she ever.
“I was told at a young age that I wouldn’t be any good except lying on my back because I became a mother at the age of 14 after my first encounter with sex,” Chandler explained. “That comment scared me deeply and I’ve walked around for over twenty years ashamed of my own reflection in the mirror. I never thought I was pretty, nor did I love the brown skinned woman I had to stare at in the mirror daily.”
Today I’ve learned and realized that it was good that I was afflicted and I am actually good on my back because when I got knocked down it forced me to look to the hills from where my help came from,” said, Chandler, sounding as confident as she’s been in some time. “It came from above. I know now that everything that I have, will, and I’m enduring is and will continue to work together for my good.”
After all, as far as distractions go, the best possible way to fend them off is to first admit that you are faced with them.
Fortunately for Chandler, not only did she admit to them.
Not only did she own up to them.
Most importantly, she has steadfastly gone to great lengths to conquer them.
Talk about a dramatic comeback for the ages.
