FLASHBACK: A Real Interview with Fake University President ‘Fantasy Shirley’

This article originally appeared in the November 2011 issue of MemphiSport.

Last month, MemphiSport sat down with the real University of Memphis Athletic Director R.C. Johnson to discuss the current state of the athletic department and its future. To follow up, we formally requested an interview with University of Memphis president Dr. Shirley Raines. Here was the response from her office:

“President Raines has asked me to let you know that she feels that R.C. covered your athletic questions well. She will keep your request active.”

All of our follow up requests were ignored despite our explanation that the interview would cover a broad range of topics about the university, her career, etc.

So with the real university president out of the picture, we turned to the fake university president on twitter – @fantasyshirley.

Here is our real interview with the fake Dr. Shirley Raines:

Do you consider yourself more of a “Dreamer, Thinker or Doer”?

I consider myself equal parts Thinker, Dreamer and Doer. Basically what you would use if you were making the ideal person to run a fine university. Take those attributes and sprinkle in a keen fashion sense and you get me!

When is it not a great day to be a Tiger?

The day John Calipari left wasn’t a great day. The day Rick Ross couldn’t make it to Memphis Madness wasn’t great either. The Whopper bar at the UC was out of ketchup one day and that wasn’t a banner day for the Tigers.

Everyone knows athletic director R.C. Johnson is a fan of Elvis. Who is your favorite music artist of all time?

I would say that is a three way tie between Clay Aiken, Barry Manilow and the 2 Live Crew. But recently I have been jamming out on my iPod to Susan Boyle- that girl throws it down.

You have been president at the University of Memphis since 2001. How long do you plan to continue at your position?

I want to be the Joe Paterno of university presidents.

You recently set a $250 million dollar goal for fundraising – how much will your salary rise if this goal is ever achieved?

Nominally.

If someone called you tomorrow and offered $100 million for the university, how would you allocate it?

I’d build an on-campus stadium…psych!

What is biggest reason to avoid building an on-campus stadium?

I was for it before I was against it. But because the construction would be really noisy and my house is near the proposed site, I had to say no. Would you want to put up with that mess? Also, Geoff Calkins was for it, so I had to be against it.

If Memphis fielded a badminton squad, would they have better facilities than the football team?

No, we would just let the football players try their hand at being on the badminton team and they could use the same facilities. Got to work smarter, not harder.

On a scale of 1 to 10 – how important is athletics to you? -

π.

What is your favorite sport?

Is “Wheel of Fortune a Sport”? If so, that is my favorite. I also enjoy gigging frogs and noodling for catfish. I wanted to be a mathlete, but books were more of my thing. I’m a published author you know.

Why is Memphis not already in a BCS conference?

We aren’t? Why is R.C. always telling me we are? He said it is because of our airport.

What was your last conversation with R.C. Johnson about?

Oh, I told him about the upcoming Kohl’s One Day Sale and how I was going to stock up on some blue blazers. He asked me if it was okay if he had a hammock installed in his office. We made lunch reservations at Houston’s and then we talked about getting LA Tech, Alcorn State, Belmont and UT Martin together in one conference to go after these so called “super conferences”. We would call it the Mega Mighty Super Duper Conference.

Do you ever talk to the students? If so, what do you say?

Rarely…

What has been your proudest moment as president of the university?

I starred in a series of commercials for the U of M. “Dreamers Thinkers. Doers” was my line.

What has been your biggest regret as president?

Not having that John Calipari bronze statue made yet.

Is there something you are trying to accomplish before retirement?

If I said total destruction of the athletic department, would you keep it off the record?

What do you want your legacy to be?

I’ll leave that to the historians, but frankly, I’m the best thing that ever happened to this institute of higher learning.

Who would you consider the U of M‘s most important alum?

Jerry “The King” Lawler. At least he represents something I would consider as a real sport. Wink Martindale also.

Would you consider teaming up with R.C. Johnson to wrestle against Geoff Calkins and Jerry Lawler in a wrestling match for charity?

Heck yes, but only if we can have it at the Mid-South Coliseum, if Bill Dundee is the special referee and if R.C. and I can be managed by Jimmy Hart. And tell Lawler that he might be the King of wrestling but I am the Queen of Memphis…I’ll be throwing the fire.

Which university property is more important- the English department or the Bursars office?

Please, the Bursar’s Office. Do I really need to tell you why?

What is your favorite building on campus?

The Ned McWherter Library. Especially the 3rd floor. Cleanest bathrooms on campus.

You were recently offered a job at Kentucky? Why didn’t you take it?

Can you imagine trying to sell a house in this market…Plus I wanted R.C. to replace Mitch Barnhardt so we could have the gang together again, but the UK Board of Regents said no dice. They called R.C. “a liability?”

Did you paint any of the 100 Tigers around campus?

I couldn’t risk getting paint on my blue blazer, so no. R.C. sure liked being in the room when they were all being spray painted. He said it really helped him make great decisions. Matter of fact, I think he was around all that painting on the day he said we deserve to be in the SEC.

Would the world be a better place if sports didn’t exist?

Not just the world, the galaxy.

What’s in a Name?: New name ideas for old Big East

With the seven Catholic schools leaving and taking the name “Big East” with them, the no name conference, that will add Houston, Tulane, East Carolina, SMU, Memphis, and UCF for the 2013 season, is in desperate need of a new name.

Perhaps the most confusing thing about all of this conference realignment is what to name these new conferences.  The Big 12 has 10 teams, the Big 10 has 12 teams, and the SEC has teams outside of the Southeastern region of the United States.  It can be confusing, but if you change the Big 12 to the Big 10 and the Big 10 to the Big 12 life will make sense.

Luckily for the remaining teams in the old Big East, there are some solid options for the new name of the Big East.  Here are a few conference name suggestions for the remaining non-Catholic schools in the old Big East:

Conference Formerly Known as the Big East
Think of that picture like the symbol that the artist formerly known as “Prince” uses.  Any symbol will work, a dollar sign with a huge slash to symbolize the lack of money the teams formerly in the Big East will make compared to the BCS conference schools, or a frowny face which will show how sad the schools are for not being invited to the Catholic 7′s new “Big East”.  Think about it, how many conferences are recognized by just a symbol?  None, so being able to add a unique twist to the conference name might actually help make up for some of the revenue that is going to be lost.  Just pick a symbol, throw in “the conference formerly known as the Big East”, and let the merchandising of the conference begin.

Conference USA 2.0
Makes sense to me.  After all, the Big East certainly likes snatching teams from C-USA.  When they first expanded in 2005, the Big East took C-USA football members Louisville, Cincinnati, and South Florida.  This time they take Houston, SMU, Tulane, Memphis, Central Florida, and East Carolina of C-USA.  With the departure of Louisville to the ACC, this makes eight of the 12 schools (Navy is not scheduled to join until 2015) former members of C-USA.

Please Take Me Next Atlantic Coast Conference Conference
The PTMNACCC is a mouthful, but when you take into account that the ACC pillages the Big East much like the Big East pillages C-USA you can understand the name.  With Pitt, Louisville, Notre Dame, and Syracuse leaving to go along with Virginia Tech, Miami, and Boston College from 2005, the Big East is looking like a minor league farm system for the ACC.

Metro Conference
This was the conference Memphis, Cincy, and Tulane belonged to before it folded resulting in the formation of  C-USA.  Since C-USA and Big East are now taken, and nobody has the name Metro Conference, it also makes sense.  Most of the universities in the old Big East are in major metropolitan areas so the name works from that angle as well.

Catholic 7
Since St. John’s, Seton Hall, Marquette, Providence, DePaul, Villanova and Georgetown are taking the Big East name with them, why can’t the old Big East teams take the name those schools have been known by the past few months. Stealing the name of the seven schools that crippled an already struggling conference, seems like the right thing to do to spite them.

TAM Rankings: Vanderbilt holds off Ole Miss to be crowned best of 2012 season

vandy anchorCollege football is official over, and there is a new champion in the TAM rankings.  Vanderbilt has dethroned last year’s champion (Arkansas), and now sits alone at the top.  The Commodores also finished the year ranked No. 23 in the AP poll, serving as the only TAM team to finish the year ranked.  Arkansas State received some votes in the AP and USA Today polls after their win against Kent State  in the Godaddy.com Bowl.  Yet their stellar season, and victory over a top 25 opponent in their bowl game, was not enough for them to jump Ole Miss, who had a remarkable season as well.  The Rebels bowl win over Pitt was their first since 2009 and capped off a great first year for head coach Hugh Freeze.  Mississippi State culminated a disappointing second half of their season (the Bulldogs went 2-5 in their last seven games after starting the year 7-0)with an equally disappointing performance in the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl.  It was a great year for the TAM teams, who posted a 3-1 record in bowl games this year, and provided fans with memorable moments throughout the season.  Next season cannot come fast enough for the TAM teams, and it should be every bit as good as this year.

Week 13 TAM Rankings: New No. 1 thanks to Ole Miss defeating Mississippi State

There is a new number one TAM team this week for the fourth time this season, and nobody saw this coming at the start of the year.  Vanderbilt now sits alone at the top of the TAM rankings thanks to an impressive 8-4 record and a win by Ole Miss over former No. 1 Mississippi State.  The Bulldogs drop one spot after their embarrassing loss to the arch rival Rebels, who jump both Sun Belt teams to secure No. 3 in the rankings.  Speaking of the Sun Belt Conference, MTSU and Arkansas State  square off on Saturday to determine the conference champion. Tennessee started a new win streak against Kentucky to end the year with a win. Memphis also ended their year on a good note with their third straight win.  Arkansas finished one of the most disappointing seasons in TAM history with a hard-fought loss to LSU, while Southern Mississippi could not find a way to muster up any wins on the year.

Week 12 TAM Rankings: Vanderbilt is challenging Mississippi State for No. 1

This week was full of big wins, crushing losses, and a coaching change for the TAM teams.  Mississippi State remained perfect against TAM teams after defeating Arkansas in convincing fashion.  The Rebels are the only thing that stands between the Bulldogs and an undefeated TAM record.  Ole Miss needs to beat Mississippi State to become bowl eligible, so there is a lot on the line for this year’s Egg Bowl.  Vanderbilt beat Tennessee so bad that the Vols decided to fire their coach.  If Vanderbilt beats Wake Forest, and Mississippi State loses, the Commodores will end the year as the No. 1 TAM team.  Arkansas State has a late bye week to get ready for their Sun Belt showdown against MTSU, and if the Blue Raiders beat Troy  on Saturday, these two TAM teams will be playing in a defacto conference championship game.  Memphis is on a two game win streak after pummeling UAB, and the Tigers have a chance to finish with a winning conference record.  All they have to do is beat the winless Golden Eagles in this year’s Black and Blue Bowl.

Week 11 TAM Rankings: Three TAM teams still trying to become bowl eligible

Bowl season is almost here and four TAM teams are now bowl eligible after last week’s games.  Mississippi State is bowl eligible and remains No. 1 in the rankings despite their third consecutive loss by 20 points or more.  They hope to stop their losing streak when they play a desperate Razorbacks team fighting for bowl eligibility.  Vanderbilt is going to consecutive bowls for the first time in the school’s history thanks to their one point win over Ole Miss.  The Rebels loss dropped them two spots in the rankings, and now they have to win one of their last two games (LSU and Mississippi State) to be bowl eligible in Hugh Freeze’s first season as head coach.  Arkansas State and MTSU are headed for an end of the year Sun Belt showdown to decide the conference champion, while Tennessee needs to win out to become bowl eligible.  The only bowl Memphis and Southern Mississippi can go to this season is the “Black and Blue Bowl”.  Southern Mississippi still has not won a game all season and Memphis is just 2-10.  So the “Black and Blue Bowl” should change its name to the “Toilet Bowl” because it may decide who is the worst team in college football.

Week 10 TAM Rankings: Season is coming to an end for TAM teams

The college football season is coming to an end, and with only three games left in the regular season our TAM teams continue to be tested.  Even though Mississippi State got off to a TAM team best 7-0 mark (and rocked some nice all white uniforms this week), they are beginning to fall back to reality suffering losses in consecutive weeks.  To make matters worse, the Bulldogs have to travel to Tiger Stadium to take on an upset LSU team fresh of a heartbreaking loss to Alabama.  It is fitting that the two teams tied for second in the rankings face off this week when Vanderbilt takes on Ole Miss.  Both teams are a win shy of bowl eligibility, so expect a heavily contested game.  Arkansas State finds themselves in the driver’s seat for a second Sun Belt Championship thanks to a Louisiana-Monroe loss on Saturday.  All the Red Wolves have to do is win out and they will be champions, but in doing so they will have to beat the Warhawks this week.  Sun Belt rival and fellow TAM team member MTSU would love to see a Red Wolves win because that would mean a potential end of the year show down between Arkansas State and the Blue Raiders for the conference title.  Tennessee and Arkansas continue to disappoint us all as both teams struggled to get wins against lesser competition on Saturday.  Memphis and Southern Mississippi continue to loss and are on pace to make the “Black and Blue Bowl” one of the worst in decades.

The Mid-South is full of fans with allegiances to different area college football programs. Which FBS program in the three states surrounding the Memphis area is the best? To help end some arguments and start others, every week MemphiSport ranks all the college football teams in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. We call it the TAM Rankings.

Week 9 TAM Rankings: Bulldogs stay No. 1 despite loss

Welcome to our special Halloween edition of the TAM rankings where the scariest thing you can be is a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.  Alabama is 4-0 against our TAM teams so far this season winning by an average margin of 33.25 points.  Mississippi State found out just how good Alabama is this year on Saturday as the Crimson Tide almost shut them out, and held the Bulldogs to a season low seven points.  However, the loss did not affect Mississippi State in our rankings and the Bulldogs remain the best TAM team.  Ole Miss avoided a scare of their own and pulled of a great last second win against fellow TAM team Arkansas to solidify them as the No. 2 team in the rankings.  The Rebels are just one win away from bowl eligibility.  Vanderbilt has won three of their last four games, and should get another win this week when they take on Kentucky.  MTSU and Arkansas State both won last week to keep their Sun Belt Championship hopes alive.  Tennessee gave the Gamecocks a good fright, but could not quite pull of the upset against South Carolina, and Derek Dooley’s seat continues to get hotter everyday.  There is nothing terrifying about the bottom two teams in the rankings, except their records.  Southern Mississippi is dangerously close to going winless on the year thanks to their 44-17 beat down at the hands of Rice.  While Memphis continued their losing ways this week and now have a 1-7 record after a loss to SMU. The Tigers join the Golden Eagles as the first two teams in the TAM rankings so far to become bowl ineligible

Week 8 TAM Football Rankings: No. 1 stays the same but everyone else moves

There is a lot of movement in the rankings this week thanks to some impressive wins and equally impressive losses.  A 42 point victory over fellow TAM team MTSU cemented Mississippi State as the best TAM team so far this season.  Ole Miss moved up without having to play anybody, and the Rebels face a Razorbacks squad who is also coming off of a bye week.  Arkansas seems to have regrouped after their four game losing streak, but will need to keep winning if they want to make it to bowl eligibility.  Three of their last five games are against top 15 competition.  Vanderbilt is up a spot from last week after beating a struggling Auburn team, while Arkansas State moves up three spots and prepares for a tough in conference game against Louisiana Lafayette.  Tennessee dropped four spots because of another embarrassing loss under Coach Dooley.  The Vols followed up their disappointing loss to Mississippi State with an embarassing 31 point loss to Alabama.  Speaking of embarrassing losses, MTSU could only muster three points against Mississippi State.  Memphis lost another home game, but still has a chance to get to bowl eligibility.  Southern Mississippi, on the other hand, is winless and at 0-7 the Golden Eagles have no chance to make a bowl this season.
