WrestleMania 29: Memphis Recap

The Undertaker is now 21-0 at WrestleMania.

The Undertaker is now 21-0 at WrestleMania.

WrestleMania 29 proved to be nothing less than spectacular. And if you were keeping score on how our “hometown” boys did, you would know that they indeed stole the show.

Last week, on the Road to WrestleMania, I discussed exactly how much of an impact Memphis would play on sports entertainment’s biggest event of the year. With everything behind us & WWE focusing on next year’s WrestleMania spectacular (already), we can take a look back & see how the home team performed.

Team Hell No:  Both Kane & Daniel Bryan started their professional wrestling careers in Memphis. Kane with USWA & Bryan from Memphis Championship Wrestling. In a spectacular match against Dolph Ziggler & Big E Langston, Team Hell No proved to be too much, as they successfully defended their Championships against WWE’s next generation.

Memphis 1-0.

Zeb Colter:  Although Zeb was not the one participating in the match, he was ringside guiding Jack Swagger into the biggest match of his life. The World Heavyweight Championship was on the line, as Alberto Del Rio ended Swagger’s chance at becoming a part of WresteMania history. Even Dutch Mantell – err – Zeb Colter couldn’t keep Swagger from tapping out to Del Rio’s devastating armbar submission.

Memphis 1-1.

The Undertaker:  When the bell tolls at WrestleMania, one thing is for sure… The Undertaker will put someone to rest. This year wasn’t any different. Taker continues The Streak by defeating CM Punk & extending his WrestleMania record to a perfect & unprecedented 21-0.

Memphis 2-1.

The Rock:  The grand finale of the evening pitted John Cena against WWE Champion, The Rock.  The former USWA Tag Team Champion & current action movie star fell short when John Cena finally captured the WWE Championship after chasing revenge for one full year.

Memphis 2-2.

Considering the magnitude of the sports entertainment spectacular, a 50% winning percentage is definitely a feather in our cap.  Each year, Memphis is featured across the world, when it comes to professional wrestling.  I don’t know about you, but I love to hear Lance Russel’s voice when the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony hits the airwaves.  (Did anyone else notice that?)

What were your thoughts on WrestleMania?  Thumbs up?  Or thumbs down?

Sports Illustrated says Bob Saget and others are ‘cooler’ than Jerry Lawler

According to Sports Illustrated’s list ranking of all 68 NCAA Tournament schools in order  by “coolest” alumnus (or alumna), Memphis’ own Jerry “The King” Lawler is not as cool as 64 other celebrities including Bob Saget, DJ Qualls, Ken Jeong, Adam Vinatieri, Kirstie Alley, George Wendt, John Lutz, Penny Marshall, Zach Galifinakis, Benson, Steve Guttenberg and fellow WWE superstar The Big Show.

How can this be? Is this list just another example of the national media not respecting the Memphis Tigers? Should Lawler challenge the staff of Sports Illustrated to a no disqualification match at WrestleMania?
