Grizzlies players weigh in on state of franchise since team traded Rudy Gay

The Grizzlies returned to work Friday afternoon for the first time since eliminating the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder and punching their ticket to the Western Conference Finals.

Still, despite all of the hoopla and the national buzz this small-market franchise has created this postseason, it seems that one proverbial topic continues to re-surface as Memphis prepares to take on the San Antonio Spurs in Game 1 of their best-of-7 series Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CST in the AT&T Center.

That is, are the Grizzlies a better team since trading franchise player Rudy Gay?

“We definitely are a better team,” said Grizzlies power forward Zach Randolph, who has become Memphis’ leading scorer since the team dealt Gay. “This team is more together. We understand. Our confidence is up. We play for one another, so we’re definitely a better team.”

That certainly didn’t appear to be the case after the Grizzlies, Raptors, and Pistons agreed to a six-player trade on January 30 that sent the star swingman to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Ed Davis, Austin Daye, and Tayshaun Prince.

For some, trading Gay was befitting, considering the seven-year veteran, at least at the time, wasn’t performing like a player who signed a five-year extension with Memphis worth a reported $82 million in July 2010. For others, they sensed that moving Gay after the team had gotten below the dreaded luxury tax threshold — after sending reserves Marresse Speights, Josh Selby, Wayne Ellington to Cleveland eight days earlier — wasn’t consummate, given Memphis was deemed a legitimate title contender before the start of the season.

Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, for instance, was among those who felt team officials’ decision to trade Gay was a questionable move. And, after a January 15 shootaround in FedExForum, Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul, who’s close friends with Gay, said “the Grizzlies would be crazy” for trading the former UConn star.

What a difference three-and-half months have made.

That’s because all the new-look Grizzlies have done since Gay’s exodus was emerge as arguably the hottest and most efficient team in the NBA, let alone pose as a serious threat to dethrone the Miami Heat in the coming weeks. Add to the fact that the Grizzlies have generated the league’s third-best record (34-14) since trading Gay and ousted two title contenders (the Clippers and Thunder) in eloquent fashion, and it’s no wonder why seasoned Grizzlies such as Randolph and Mike Conley don’t shy away from weighing in on a subject they believe is an afterthought at this stage in the season.

“We’re happy to be here.” Conley said of Memphis’ historical run to the conference finals. “But we’re focused on bigger things. You’ve

got to have a vision. And even with Rudy being gone, it might have altered the vision a little bit, might have been a little bit tougher on guys to do it, but the vision stays the same. I still believed (after the trade) that we had a chance. I still believed that if certain guys step up, that we could be just as good, that we could be a good team.”

While Hollins publicly acknowledged he wasn’t in favor of the Grizzlies bargaining Gay, he said among the things he appreciates mostly about his team is the camaraderie his players have established in the aftermath of the trade, a key characteristic he feels has benefited the Grizzlies immensely in the playoffs.

“Well, that’s why they pay me the big bucks,” Hollins jokingly said. “That’s the hardest part of coaching…motivating, getting them to accept their roles, getting them to play together. You do those three things and you got talent, you have a good chance of winning. It’s a difficult proposition. There’s a lot of ways to go about it. I’m not going to tell you how I go about it because it’s not good for TV.”

The Grizzlies, appearing in the conference finals for the first time since the team’s inception in 1995 (Vancouver), have certainly been must-see TV this postseason, a trend this town has relished since Gay — whom many labeled an ambassador for the city of Memphis during his stint here — was sent north of the border.

As for whether Memphis is better off since trading Gay, it’s safe to assume the longest-tenured Grizzly is being careful to use his words wisely.

“I think it’s a different team without Rudy,” Conley said.

With a straight face.

Top 5 Moments Of Rudy Gay’s Grizzlies Career

It finally happen.  Rudy Gay has been traded, getting Memphis under the luxury tax, and making them more flexible financially.  Gay started his career in Memphis and was the longest tenured Grizzlies player on the team.  He was the face of the franchise, holding the all-time record for games played (479) and minutes played (17338) as a member of the Grizzlies. However, he was not living up to his max contract, and with Memphis on the verge of having to pay a luxury tax he had to be dealt. There is no more speculation about where he will go, or talk about how he is not living up to his max contract.  Gay gave fans several great moments, and now that he is gone, we should all take a step back and reflect on the good times Gay has given the fans on the court.

Charity game
With the NBA lockout in full force, Gay found a way to give fans some of the professional basketball action that they so desperately craved.  He put on a charity game highlighted by NBA superstars Lebron James, Kevin Durant, and Tyreke Evans, with all proceeds going to his Flight 22 Foundation. Gay’s team lost 158-151, but he led all scorers with 45 points and countless jaw dropping dunks.  It might not have been a NBA game, but the fact he was able to bring his superstar buddies to Memphis showed how much he cared about the community, and it certainly gave us a very memorable moment.

The ”Make your own luck” game
His headband curse is infamous.  It seems like every time Gay wears one, he plays poorly.  However, on January 23, 2012, after trainers poked fun at him for his performance while wearing a headband, Gay decided to wear one against the Golden State Warriors.  The Grizzlies were down by 20 points with 3:43 left in the third quarter, and the Warriors were supposed to cruise to a big win.  Yet that is not what happened, thanks in part to Gay’s performance.  He led the team with 23 points (19 in the second half), and when Memphis needed a bucket to ice the game, Gay connected on a beautiful fade-away jump shot with just 22 seconds left in the game.  He did more than just score that night, he was a play maker and a facilitator.  It was one of those nights where he looked like a max player, as he helped lead a furious comeback to get a solid victory for Memphis.  Then after the game, with a grin on his face, he showed us that infectious charisma of his and uttered quite possibly the most famous words of his life, “Kids out there, make your own luck.”

“No not this guy!” shot against the Raptors
It is ironic that one of Gay’s most memorable moments has come against the team that he is now a member.  The score was 98-98 with just 18.1 seconds left the game with Gay inbounding the ball, which is all very routine.  He hits Mike Conley, gets a down screen from Marc Gasol, and catches the Conley pass at the top of the key, which is still very routine. With time dwindling on the game clock Gay takes two dribbles to his right, elevates, and hits his patented jumper with almost no time left, which is still part of the routine.  That shot is his go to move, his length makes it difficult to contest, and the Raptors should have expected it.  So why is this very routine shot against the lowly Raptors one of Gay’s most memorable moments?

Well unbeknownst to Gay, the Raptors, or any of us there was a fan recording the final seconds of the game.  When Gay touches the ball, you can hear the panic, fear, and general displeasure in the fan’s voice,  “No it’s Rudy Gay!  Not this Guy!  Not this guy,” as Gay hits the game winning jump shot. The fan’s reaction is hilarious (Watch the NSFW video), and it is a moment that will live on forever in Grizzlies lore.

41 point game
On December 13, 2009 Gay scored 40 plus points for the first and only time in his career, setting a career high in points against the Heat.  He was unstoppable, hitting 15-28 shots from the field and 3-4 from three.  Memphis was a remarkable plus 35 points with him on the court, as he literally had his way the Heat.  It was one of those games where Gay showed why he was becoming one of the NBA’s top up and coming young talents, and why it might be worth paying big bucks to keep him.  Memphis did just that, signing him to a max deal, but he just never lived up to his contract and he is now a member of the Toronto Raptors.

Game winner over Lebron James
Another game winner tops the list of most memorable Gay moments.  This time it comes against one of the best players in the NBA, Lebron James.  After James tied the game thanks to a Gay turnover, it seemed like the contest was going into overtime.  There was just 5.5 seconds left on the clock, and momentum was strictly in the Heat’s favor.  It was a tough night for Gay, who James had effectively took out of the game on the offensive end.  Before the game winning shot, Gay was just 4-12 from the field and 0-3 from behind the arch.  However, that did not deter him, and with the game on the line Gay rose up over James and hit the game winner as time expired.  It was a good day to be Gay and a good day for Grizzlies fans everywhere.

Mike Conley starting to emerge as one of NBA’s elite point guards

With 6 minutes, 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter of Wednesday night’s Toronto Raptors versus Memphis Grizzlies game, the announced 14,603 witnesses on hand held their collective breath when Mike Conley got tangled with Toronto’s Kyle Lowry and tumbled hard to the floor under the basket.

Fortunately for Conley, he emerged to his feet, then headed toward the free throw line after Lowry was whistled for a foul, resulting in a mutual sigh of relief among spectators for a player whose absence against Cleveland affected Memphis’ ability to execute its pick and roll offense with efficiency.

Wednesday was an entirely different story for the Grizzlies, who extended their undefeated streak to three games with a resounding 103-82 win against the struggling Raptors. Memphis now owns a half-game lead over San Antonio in the Western Conference standings. Conley, back in the lineup after missing Monday’s outing because of flu-like symptoms, was part a balanced attack that saw five Memphis players score in double figures. The 6-foot-1 point guard orchestrated the Grizzlies’ pick and roll offense with ease and registered 16 points on 4-of-6 field goals and five assists in 30-plus minutes against a Toronto squad that suffered its sixth consecutive defeat.

Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley returned to action Wednesday night versus the Raptors and showed no signs of fatigue after missing the previous game with flu-like symptoms. “I was feeling a little better,” a seemingly rejuvenated Conley said after a reporter jokingly asked if his flu-like symptoms were contagious. “I wasn’t out there coughing and things. (Monday’s game) was tough. I was home watching the game and dang near drove to the Forum.”

After Monday’s grind-it-out 84-78 win against the Cavaliers that resulted in the Grizzlies’ lowest scoring output of the season, it was evident that Conley’s return against the Raptors proved pivotal in that it enabled Memphis to effectively put the game out of reach after turning a one-point halftime lead into an 81-61 cushion by the end of the third quarter.

“He’s our floor general,” Hollins said of Conley, who finished second in the NBA in steals last year. “I’ve said it all along. People don’t want to give Mike his due credit.”

A six-year veteran who, during the early stages of his career, was deemed overrated and came under some harsh criticism by fans and the media for what they sensed was poor leadership at the one position, the 24-year-old Conley is starting to demonstrate why he is now rated among the league’s elite point guards.

Take, for instance, the assertiveness Conley exhibited  against Toronto, particularly when the Grizzlies began pulling away during a crucial 10-minute stretch that bridged the third and fourth quarters. With 3:49 remaining in the third, Conley, showing no signs of fatigue from Monday’s illness, threw a fastbreak pass to Tony Allen, who converted a one-handed slam that gave Memphis a 70-53 lead. Hollins elected to rest Conley at the start of the  fourth quarter. However, after he checked back in the game at the 7:14 mark of the final frame, Conley continued to make his presence felt when he penetrated to the basket, then dished to Rudy Gay, who squared up and buried a 3-point basket that increased the Grizzlies’ advantage to 93-71 with 6:41 left. Moments later, Conley showed he was equally effective defensively when he forced one of the Grizzlies’ two charging fouls in the second half when Toronto’s Terrence Ross attempted a running floater in the lane with 5:45 remaining.

“Good player,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said of Conley. “He had a big comeback tonight. “He’s a pro, has a very professional approach to the game. He’s the engine that makes that team go.”

Something about which Hollins contends he had known since Conley — who was selected with the fourth overall pick by Memphis in the 2007 NBA draft — joined the franchise after two stellar seasons at Ohio State.

“I’ve got to give a shout out to Mike Conley and all the haters of Mike Conley,” Hollins told reporters after Monday’s game. “He’s one of the most valuable players we have on this team. He’s not a flashy guy and not a big scorer, not a big name, but helps makes us go, and we missed him big time.”

Conley was brought to smiles after learning of Hollins’ postgame remarks.

“It was weird to hear that coach said that,” Conley said. “I’ve never felt better, no doubt. Besides this little sickness lately, I’ve been better. It’s great being a part of this team now.”

Unlike the flu-like symptoms he acquired earlier this week, the buzz Conley has helped create surrounding Grizzlies’ early-season success is contagious.
