Lloyd Covington is a pretty sharp, clever, resourceful guy.
Take, for instance, how on Wednesday afternoon during an exclusive interview with longtime journalist Andre Johnson, Covington explained in great details how for someone who did not engage in varsity high sports still used athletics as way to delve off into entrepreneurship.
In many aspects, it seems, Covington and the sport of football go hand in hand.
“Football’s competitive nature has taught me many successful business principles,” Covington, a diehard Green Bay Packers fan, explained. “I use many of these principles to propel me to run a successful business.”
And successful he has surely become.
A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Covington, 45, is owner and chief operating officer of Covington Properties, LLC, a booming, progressive business venture that has afforded Covington to own 20 rental properties in Milwaukee and 11 in Memphis.
Given the immense strides he’s made in recent years, it’safe to assume that the sky’s undoubtedly is the limit for this thriving businessman whom, because of his strong ties to Memphis, admittedly is an avid fan of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.

How ironic, considering that as a Grizz fan, Covington has — for the lack of better words — Grit Grinded his way to entrepreneurial success.

“To be successful in football, you need to be determined,” Covington said. “You have to be willing to take calculated risks, and you have to be tenacious enough to do what others are not willing to do to be the best on the field. These same attributes are the same attributes I use on a daily business to build a successful business.”
A business whereby his targeted age groups are 18-and-up, Covington acknowledges there are, by all accounts, and assortment of aspects as it pertains to being his own boss.
“There are many aspects of my business that I enjoy…I have the opportunity to create and build my own wealth while simultaneously providing a different possibility for my community and providing a slice of the American Dream to many who would not have a place to call home,” Covington explained. “I am a philanthropist by nature. My passion is to use my resources and my community connections to assist families that are looking for a new beginning and connect them to resources available to them such as rent assistance and security deposits so that they can begin to create a new reality for their families.”
A real estate industry that spans more than 25 years, Covington owns properties in the greater Milwaukee area as well as in South Memphis, Whitehaven, Hickory Hill, and Germantown areas of the Mid-South.

“As a business owner, you have to be open to all possibilities, and sometimes those possibilities may require you to expand your horizons,” said Covington, adding that he will be hosting a workshop sometime early next year on how consumers can buy properties and create wealth investing in real estate.

“It is my personal belief that one should not gather things to store up for himself but to also use the blessings that have been bestowed upon him to uplift others,” Covington said. “When you are successful in life, it is important to remain grounded and to have a willingness to help others achieve the same level of success. Our communities are struggling, and it is vital that business owners not only invest in their business, but also invest in the communities in which they operate.”
