Week 15 TAM Rankings: Big Win in Egg Bowl for Rebels Moves Them to First

ole miss helmet blueWhat a bounce back week for the Rebels of Ole Miss.  After the most disappointing performance of the season, Ole Miss knocked off in-state rival Mississippi State to win the Battle for the Golden Egg.  Thanks to Jaylen Walton’s career high 148 yards on the ground, the Rebels were able to salvage a season that appeared to be taking a turn for the worst.

Mississippi State ends their remarkable season with back to back SEC losses, and cannot lay claim to a SEC West Co-Championship.  The loss also means that the Bulldogs have to share the top spot in this week’s ranking with their arch nemesis.

Memphis won this week making them American Athletic Conference Champions (Let that sink in.  This is the Tigers first football conference championship since 1971.)

Arkansas failed to get their third straight conference win as they fell to Missouri despite leading for most of the game.

Tennessee held on to beat rival Vanderbilt despite only 92 passing yards.  The Vols managed to get three interceptions in route to their seven point victory.  Beating Vandy gave Tennessee six wins and made them bowl eligible for the first time since 2010.  Vanderbilt managed to lose all of their conference games for the first time since 2009.

MTSU fell to UTEP this week making it the Blue Raiders third lost in their last four games, while Arkansas State snapped their two game losing streak by blowing out New Mexico State.

Southern Mississippi made history this week in their loss to UAB.  The Blazers have fired their AD and are eliminating all sports programs so the Golden Eagles will go down in history as the last football team UAB beat.

No TAM teams are playing this week so there is no TAM Game of the Week.

Next up for the TAM teams is bowl season.  Bowl season is going to be a blast as seven of the nine TAM teams are bowl eligible this year.

Without further ado, here are week fifteen’s TAM Rankings…

Week 14 TAM Rankings: Arkansas Up Two Spots After Shutout Win Over Ole Miss

state gloveIt is time to give serious kudos to Coach Bret Bielema and the Arkansas Razorbacks who notched their second straight conference win after going 0-17 the past three seasons.  Arkansas knocked off Ole Miss, giving them six wins on the year and making them bowl eligible.  The Razorbacks took a page out of the book of the infamous Land Shark defense and forced six turnovers in route to their second straight shutout victory against a divisional foe.

Poor Ole Miss.  They had an outside shot at a SEC West Title and a chance to jump into the College Football Playoffs.  However, the loss to Arkansas eliminated them from SEC Championship contention and the fact it was 30-0 just added insult to injury.

The Bulldogs pitched a shutout of their own against a nobody this week and are going into the Egg Bowl with all the momentum on their side (Vandy is the nobody that Mississippi State beat.  Since Vanderbilt is so bad they only get a parenthesis not their own paragraph this week.  Sorry ‘Dores fans.)

Tennessee gave Missouri everything they could handle, but ended up falling just short.  The Vols need to win their final game of the season to gain bowl eligibility.  Thankfully they get the same nobody Mississippi State just beat 51-0.

Memphis won this week, keeping their hopes at an American Championship alive.  All the Tigers have to do is beat UCONN and they will at least a share of the AAC Championship.

MTSU snapped their two game losing streak by knocking off Florida Atlantic in the waning moments of their contest.  With that win the Blue Raiders have become bowl eligible.

Arkansas State suffered their second straight loss as they watched Texas State run all over the field.  The Red Wolves gave up 370 yards on the ground in route to their 18 point loss.

Southern Mississippi managed to escape defeat this week thanks in large part to the Golden Eagles bye week.

It is thanksgiving weekend and there is one obvious choice for the TAM Game of the Week, Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss.  The famed Battle for the Golden Egg has lost some of its luster thanks to the Rebels downfall, but Mississippi State can still get a share of the SEC West Championship and remain in the hunt for the College Football Playoffs

Week 13 TAM Rankings: Mississippi State Remains No. 1 After Loss To Bama

state cakeIt was quite the weekend for our TAM teams, and we will start with Mississippi State.

The last unbeaten TAM team fell in Tuscaloosa on Saturday as the Bulldogs just did not have enough to knock off mighty Alabama.  Dak Prescott threw three interceptions in the loss to the Crimson Tide.  However, even with their first loss the Bulldogs remain the top team in the TAM Rankings.

Ole Miss now controls their destiny in their quest to be the best TAM team thanks to the Bulldogs loss.  A win this week versus Arkansas will set up a showdown of monumental proportions in the Egg Bowl.

Speaking of Arkansas, the Razorbacks finally got their first SEC win of Bret Bielema’s tenure.  The Razorbacks last SEC victory came against Kentucky October 13, 2012.

Tennessee also got a much needed win this week throttling Kentucky.  With their wins this week both the Vols and Razorbacks each need one more win to reach bowl eligibility.

Memphis won their fourth straight contest, keeping them in contention for the American Athletic Championship.  The last time the Tigers won four straight games was 2003 when some guy by the name of DeAngelo Williams was in the backfield.

MTSU suffered four costly turnovers and got outscored 21-7 in the second half in route to their loss to FIU.  While Arkansas State fell to Appalachian State all but ending their chances at a Sun Belt Championship.

Thanks to a bye week Vandy managed to avoid losing, but Southern Mississippi was not as fortunate falling to UTSA.

This week’s TAM Game of the Week belongs to none other than Ole Miss vs. Arkansas.  The Rebels are still in contention for a SEC West Championship, but they need to win out and get some help from other teams.  Arkansas is trying to build on their first SEC win in ages and become bowl eligible.

Only two weeks remain in the regular season and the TAM teams are ready to end the season on a good note.

Without further ado, here are week thirteen’s TAM Rankings…

Week 12 TAM Rankings: Memphis Tigers Become Bowl Eligible for the First Time Since 2008

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThere is a new bowl eligible TAM team, and you might not believe who it is.

The Memphis Tigers have become bowl eligible for the first time in six years with their win Friday night over Temple.  It was an ugly game as the Tigers were held under 20 points for just the second time all year, yet Memphis found a way on a last second field goal to not only become bowl eligible, but stay in contention for the American Championship.

The Bulldogs and the Rebels both handled overmatched opponents this week.  Ole Miss returned to their winning ways, trouncing the Purple Hose 48 to nothing, while Mississippi State remained undefeated by beating UT Martin.

Arkansas, MTSU, and Tennessee all had bye weeks Saturday, while Arkansas State also managed to become bowl eligible after rolling over South Alabama.

Both Vanderbilt and Southern Mississippi were demolished in their contests by Florida and Marshall respectively. These two losses cement the Commodores and Golden Eagles as the worst TAM teams, but more importantly, the losses eliminate both teams from bowl contention.

This week’s TAM Game of the Week belongs to Mississippi State vs. Alabama.  A win this week gives the Bulldogs the SEC West crown and all but ensures them a spot in the College Football Playoffs.

There are only a few weeks left in the college football season and the TAM teams are really separating themselves from everyone else.

Week 11 TAM Rankings: Loss Knocks Rebels Out of Playoff

miss state blanketIt was another unpredictable week for the TAM teams with some getting key victories, others pulling off major upsets, and one with suffering a back breaking loss.

At the top of the rankings sits one of three undefeated teams left in the nation.  Mississippi State took another underdog’s best shot when they took on SEC West Rival and fellow TAM team Arkansas.  The Razorbacks took an early 10 point lead, but allowed 17 unanswered points to fall in heartbreaking fashion for the fifth time in conference play this season.

While we are on the topic of heartbreaking losses Ole Miss all but lost their shot at a playoff birth with a loss to Auburn.  On one play the Rebels lost the game and star receiver Laquon Treadwell.  Yet, the Rebels have pretty much guaranteed themselves a top two finish in these rankings because of their record and wins over Tennessee, Memphis, and Vanderbilt.

Memphis recovered from a slow start on Halloween night to knock off Tulsa and now sits at the top of the American standings (thanks to losses by East Carolina and UCF).  The Tigers are now one win away from bowl eligibility.

Tennessee knocked off South Carolina in overtime making this the second straight year the Vols have beaten the Gamecocks.

MTSU was throttled by a motivated BYU team while Arkansas State got back to their winning ways against Idaho.

The Golden Eagles turned the ball over five times in route to another blowout loss on the season.  Southern Mississippi is one loss away from becoming ineligible for a bowl.

Vanderbilt kept its bowl hopes alive by manhandling Old Dominion at home.

It is November so every game is meaningful from this point on, but there can only be one TAME Game of the Week.  That honor belongs to Memphis who can lay claim to a share of the American Championship if they win out.  The Tigers face a Temple team who beat Vanderbilt earlier this year and just got a win over East Carolina.

The bowl picture is becoming clearer with every passing week and all of the TAM teams still have a chance to become bowl eligible.

Week 10 TAM Rankings: Ole Miss Falls to LSU

msu_bulldog_nation_flag_53289smaThere were two undefeated TAM teams going into Saturday’s contests, and after the smoke settled there was only one.

After a heavily contested victory on the road against an improving Kentucky squad, Mississippi State is the only undefeated team in these rankings.

Ole Miss went into Tiger Stadium at night on a Saturday and played valiantly.  Unfortunately the Rebels just could not find a way to pull off the victory and fell to LSU.  Giving the Rebels their first loss of the season.  Even with that loss Ole Miss remains number two in the TAM Rankings.

Memphis came out firing on all cylinders against SMU, torching the Mustangs with 582 total yards and beating them by 38 points.

Arkansas got back to winning this week blasting lowly UAB.  More importantly the Razorbacks gave fans one of the greatest plays of the year.

Tennessee surrendered 20 first quarter points in route to a 14 point loss to Alabama, while Arkansas State fell to Louisiana Lafayette in a Tuesday night game.

MTSU rested this week to get ready for their matchup with BYU, and Southern Mississippi lost more than their game this week when starting quarterback Nick Mullens left the game with a foot injury.

With their loss to Missouri, Vanderbilt is one loss away from missing out on a bowl for the first time since 2010.

As always there are tons of great matchups featuring TAM teams.  Yet there can only be one TAM Game of the Week, and that distinction goes to Ole Miss versus Auburn.  The Rebels are coming off a heartbreaking loss, but have no time to sulk as a very talented Auburn team comes to town trying to keep their national title hopes alive.

We are a week closer to bowl season and the TAM teams are ready for a late season push towards bowl eligibility.

Week 8 TAM Rankings: Bulldogs Unanimous Number One TAM Team

miss st helmetMississippi State and Ole Miss continue to dominate the college football landscape.  The Bulldogs had a well-deserved bye week, while the Rebels dominated in their contest against fellow TAM team Tennessee.  Ole Miss held the team from Rocky Top to just 191 yards of total offense, zero rushing yards, and just three points.

Tennessee was not the only TAM team to get throttled this week.  Arkansas allowed 31 second quarter points and trailed 38-6 at half time before Georgia stepped off of the gas.

Both Tennessee and Arkansas fell in the TAM Rankings because of their pitiful performances, which means Memphis moves on up to three.  This is the highest the Tigers have ever been ranked in these rankings.

Arkansas State and Vanderbilt had bye weeks as well, and MTSU returned to their winning ways by knockling off C-USA foe UAB.

Southern Mississippi managed to beat North Texas for their third win of the year.

This is another week full of awesome contests featuring TAM Teams, but there can only be one Game of the Week.  Ole Miss vs. LSU gets that distinction this week.  It is one thing to go into Tiger Stadium at night as the hunter, but the Rebels will not be the hunted on Saturday.  Vegas has the Rebs favored by three points in that game so a loss to LSU would be considered an upset.

It is that time of the year where teams begin to separate themselves from one another.  Here is hoping that your favorite TAM team makes you proud.

Without further ado, here are week eight’s TAM Rankings…

Week 7 TAM Rankings: Mississippi Schools Are Tied For First

miss license plateThose two schools in Mississippi just keep on rolling and are cementing themselves as two of the best teams in the nation.  More importantly they are clearly the two best teams in these rankings and are tied this week for the number one overall spot.

Ole Miss destroyed a Texas A&M squad that many anointed SEC West Champions after the first week of the season.  It was 35-7 before Hugh Freeze called off the dogs and let the reserves have some fun.

Not to be outdone by their instate rival, Mississippi State forced Auburn to commit two turnovers on their first two plays from scrimmage in route to a 15 point victory over last year’s SEC Champions.

Arkansas suffered another close loss this time at the hands of Alabama after leading most of the game.  The dominate Razorbacks rushing attack was held to just 89 total rushing yards, and managed five rushing yards the entire second half.  This is the Razorbacks fifteenth straight conference loss, and coach Bret Bielema is still looking for his first SEC win.

Tennessee bounced back nicely against UT Chattanooga.  They will get to pick on somebody their own size this week when they face fellow TAM team Ole Miss on Saturday.

After looking like one of the best teams outside the “Power Five”, Memphis came back down to Earth Saturday.  Paxton Lynch and company suffered their first loss to a team outside of the AP’s Top 25 Poll when Houston came to town.  Memphis was playing mistake free football up until their five turnover performance on Saturday.

Arkansas State manhandled Georgia State, while Rakeem Cato and Marshall proved to be too much for MTSU to handle.

Vandy played one of the best FCS teams in the nation and came away with a one point victory.  Southern Mississippi was off this week, and look to get a much needed win against North Texas Saturday.

There are a slew of games featuring TAM teams worth watching this week, but Tennessee vs. Ole Miss is the TAM Game of the Week.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State are both bowl eligible and you can expect a few more TAM teams to join them when it is all said and done.

Without further ado, here are week seven’s TAM Rankings…

Week 6 TAM Rankings: All eyes on the state of Mississippi

_Ole_Miss__Umbre_4f2a88d925759The TAM teams showed up and showed out in a big way this weekend with three impressive wins

If you are looking for big wins look no further than the state of Mississippi. With ESPN College Gameday in Oxford and SEC Nation in Starkville both Ole Miss and Mississippi State had a chance to make emphatic statements.  They both faced elite competition and they both rose to the occasion in a monumental way.

The Bulldogs took Texas A&M to that area behind the proverbial woodshed and issued a thorough 17 point beat down.  Not to be out done by their archrival, Ole Miss knocked off big bad Bama in a thrilling game.  If these two teams continue their winning ways this year’s Egg Bowl will be for the SEC West crown (let that sink in nonbelievers).

Speaking of huge wins, Memphis (yes Memphis) destroyed rival Cincinnati giving the Tigers a huge in conference win and increasing their chances of becoming  bowl eligible for the first time in ages.

Tennessee played another close game coming up just short to archrival Florida, and poor ole Vanderbilt was little competition for Todd Gurley and Georgia.

MTSU took down fellow TAM team Southern Miss to solidify their place among the top teams in C-USA.

Arkansas State took care of business against LA Monroe and get the best team in the Sun Belt, Georgia Southern, next.

The Razorbacks had a bye week and get to face off with a Crimson Tide team that is going to be furious following their loss to Ole Miss.

All eyes will remain on Mississippi this week as Mississippi State gets another chance to prove themselves against the Auburn Tigers in the TAM Game of the Week.

The TAM teams are beginning to separate themselves from the pack and this week will be another opportunity for them to show what they can do.

Without further ado, here are week six’s TAM Rankings…

Week 5 TAM Rankings: Ole Miss remains No. 1 as GameDay and SEC Nation head to Mississippi

ole-miss-powder-blue-helmetsIt was a weekend of near wins and heartbreaking losses for TAM teams.

Arkansas dominated Texas A&M, who was the No. 6 team in the nation, for most of the game.  Yet, a late missed field goal immediately followed by a blown coverage assignment allowed Kenny “Trill” Hill and Texas A&M to force overtime. Subsequently, the Razorbacks wound up losing the game in overtime.

Speaking of close SEC football games, Tennessee gave Georgia all they could handle before losing the game by three points.  The Vols played admirably led by Jalen Hurd’s 119 yards on the ground and Justin Worley’s three touchdown passes.  Unfortunately that was not enough to knock off Todd Gurley and the Bulldogs.  Tennessee is now riding a 21 game losing streak on the road versus ranked opponents.

Memphis went on the road to face a ranked opponent of their own when they faced Ole Miss at Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium.  It was 7-3 for most of Saturday’s contest between these two Mid-South rivals.  Then the fourth quarter came and Ole Miss scored 17 unanswered points to put the Tigers away.

Mississippi State had the week off to prepare for Texas A&M, and Arkansas State got a much needed bye week as well.

MTSU bounced back nicely a week after their loss to Memphis, looking dominate against Old Dominion.

Southern Mississippi and Vanderbilt continued their losing ways as Southern Miss fell to last year’s C-USA Champions Rice and Vandy gave Kentucky their first SEC win in 17 tries.

There are so many great games this week featuring TAM teams, but it is special whenever the No. 1 team in the nation comes to town.  Thus, this week’s TAM Game of the Week is none other than Ole Miss vs. Alabama.

It should be another pulse pounding week of TAM football as it is time for conference action this week.

Without further ado, here are week five’s TAM Rankings…
