The 2012 M Awards

M Awards 2013 Voting Is Live

13-M-AwardsM Stands for Memphis. M Stands for major league. M stands for magnanimous. M stands for marvelous, master, and most of all, MemphiSport.

The M Award stands for all that is great in Memphis area sports. And the best part is that it is up to you. That’s right, you -the readers, listeners and viewers- will be the only judges for this award. No referees, no coaches poll, and no panel of experts. You vote for the best of the past year in Memphis Sports. This year’s nominees are for the period between June 2012 and June 2013. (Note: M also stands for multiple choice – we took the liberty of selecting who we feel are the most deserving for each award, but feel free to select anyone you choose.)

You are in charge here, and what you say goes. You make the picks and we tabulate the results. That’s all there is to it. Look for the winners to start appearing right here on Memphisport.com starting July 1.

POLLS ARE NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU FOR VOTING. CHECK BACK AT MEMPHISPORT.COM EVERY DAY IN JULY TO SEE NEW WINNERS.

2012 M Awards: Favorite Team

We have done it. Another year of the M Awards. As it does every year, the Tigers will take home the top prize again this year. Though the margin of victory is getting closer every year. In any case, I don’t think the Tigers have anything to fear from the third place Rebels with a meager 5.26%. I would sing the “I’m so glad” song but I truly don’t know all the words… So here is my favorite pre-Jimi Jamison Survivor song…

Risin’ up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don’t lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the cream of the fight
Risin’ up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all in the eye of the tiger.

I could have guessed this one with my eyes closed. In fact, I am typing this one with my eyes closed and one arm tied behind my back. Now I am placing one foot behind my chair. At the same time I am turning around clockwise so that my behind is facing the computer. Now I am going to insert my remaining free hand into a sock. thhekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kkjhjlkxo;ekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi kekks yyteeejll addsfeg  sksybek sakjhgxsi k.

2012 M Awards: Favorite Athlete

Tony is a psychotic, deeply confused, autistic, socially inept man. He lives alone in a flat on a London council estate tower block. He obsessively collects 1980s violent action movies, and he aimlessly wanders the streets of London looking to connect with anybody, his daily routine is dull, empty, odd, and is made up of deeply bad habits. He has been unemployed and living on job seekers allowance for 20 years. Tony is a serial killer.

This description is not about Tony Allen. This description is about a bad movie made in 2009 called “Tony.” Tony Allen is not a serial killer, but a serial winner. Congrats.

2012 M Awards: Most Hated Rival

Is it a rival if you don’t even play games against them? Who knows. Hopefully the hatred in Memphis will subside now that he has won a big one up there in Kentucky? Kentucky and Memphis are both missing an opportunity here to cash in on this non-rivalry while it is hot. Who is running these institutions anyway?

2012 M Awards: Favorite Football Player

First place here claimed more than 45% of the vote and second place only 17%. First place played for the University of Memphis and second place played against them while at Ole Miss. Last year my quote was this, “I can’t imagine a scenario where this year’s second place winner could take this award next year. Pre-congratulations for winning this award next year, DeAngelo!” This is the sixth year of the M Awards. I am going to go ahead and call this award for the next four years. After DeAngelo wins this award for ten years straight we will rename this the DeAngelo Williams Favorite Football Player Award.
