Throwback Thursday: Remembering “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel

Last week, we celebrated the life and career of one of the most charismatic World Heavyweight Champions of all time – “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes.  This week, we will remember another legend who left his mark on Memphis Wrestling.  On June 22nd, we lost “The Nature Boy” Buddy Landel.

Although Buddy Landel may be more well-known for his time spent in WCW and WWF, today we will take a look at some of his finest work in Memphis.

This week’s Throwback Thursday clips features one of the most memorable moments in Memphis Wrestling history.  Funny enough, it involves the legendary “Superstar” Bill Dundee, as well.  Dundee & Landel, as a team, took over the hosting duties on the March 29, 1986 episode of Memphis Wrestling.  That was nearly 30 years ago – and it’s still television gold today.

I had the opportunity to work with Buddy Landel early in my career.  Landel was very well-respected in the locker room.  During the time I was around him, he was performing speaking engagements at youth groups and sharing his story to help make a difference.  I am very sorry to hear of his passing.

Fact:  Have you ever wondered how Buddy Landel was able to use the nickname “Nature Boy?” At one time, Landel was being groomed for a major feud with World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair – whom is also known as “Nature Boy.”  The feud never took off but the two did have a match in 1990 on WCW TV.

THIS Saturday Night:  Maria & I will be celebrating 4th of July in Jonesboro, AR at their annual 4th in the Forest.  We are fully stocked with Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame t-shirts & brand new Power Couple 8×10 photos – we hope to see you there!  For more information, click here.

Throwback Thursday: Classic USWA tag team wrestling

This week, I have a clip that features two WWE trainers, a Superstar, and one of the biggest names in pro wrestling history all in one tag team match.  Looking back 25 years ago, this footage is golden.

“Superstar” Bill Dundee & Steve Keirn vs Steve Austin & Tom Prichard – and if that isn’t good enough for you – the late Tojo Yamamoto is ringside causing trouble.  Enjoy!

Speaking of “Superstar” Bill Dundee – I have one more clip I would like to share on Throwback Thursday.  Only this time, we go back just one week ago to Memphis Wildfire Wrestling‘s RETURN of the BURN.  Maria & I went head to head with Bill Dundee in the main event at Woodland Hills Event Center.  Things got a little out of hand in the end!

Don’t miss Memphis Wildfire Wrestling‘s Memphis in Mayhem at Woodland Hills Event Center on May 28th.  For more details, click here.

Fun Fact:  Steve Keirn and Tom Prichard have both been trainers for World Wrestling Entertainment.  Prichard is a former WWE Tag Team Champion, while Keirn was one half of The Fabulous Ones.

Jerry-Lawler-with-Trophy

Jerry Lawler has won two Southern Heavyweight Classic trophies, including the one held in January.

Tonight is the big night!  What better way to celebrate Throwback Thursday than to take a look back at the 4th Annual Southern Heavyweight Classic held in January of this year?  After all, it’s not every day you step in the ring with Jerry “The King” Lawler in the Main Event for a trophy based on so much Memphis Wrestling tradition.

Each year twelve men enter the tournament – one man prevails as winner and new Southern Heavyweight Classic Champion.  The guests for the evening were absolutely star-studded – the who’s who of Memphis Wrestling.  WWE Hall of Famer KoKo B. Ware, the legendary “Superstar” Bill Dundee and even Dave Brown were on hand at Minglewood Hall to see who would prevail at the end of the night.

Lawler and I had already defeated two other opponents before finally meeting at the end.  Take a look at the entire night’s highlights in this week’s clip – including the final minutes of the Main Event (21:19 mark).

Memphis Wildfire Wrestling’s Southern Heavyweight Classic takes place tonight (Dec. 18th) at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, TN.  Two feature bouts have been added to Round 1 of the tournament – Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee and “Grand Master Sexay” Brian Christopher vs. Jeff Jarrett.  The winner of each match will face the other in Round 2.

Throwback Thursday: Lawler vs Dundee

On December 18th at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, TN, the biggest rivalry in Memphis Wrestling history will be renewed.  One last chapter will be written in the storied feud between two of the very best to ever step foot in the square circle.  “Superstar” Bill Dundee will go one on one with Jerry “The King” Lawler in Round 1 of the Southern Heavyweight Classic presented by Memphis Wildfire Wrestling.

These two have done it all, when it comes to sports entertainment.  However, when you put the two together inside the ring – it’s pure magic.  Whether you take a look back at 1985 when Dundee defeated Lawler for the Southern Heavyweight Championship or the numerous Loser Leaves Town matches between the two.  Or how about when Lawler defeated Dundee in a Hair Match… with Dundee’s wife’s hair on the line.  The two have had epic battles.

Last month at BRAWL in the FALL, Dundee was scheduled to make a major announcement.  The announcement ended up being a challenge to The King himself.  Take a look:

Although both men seem cordial in this clip, their feud has been going on for 50 years.  They do not like each other.  Both men would love nothing more than to defeat the other, make their way to the Finals & win the 5th Annual Southern Heavyweight Classic.

This week’s classic clip is from the 1970’s.  Not only do you get a little taste of Lawler vs Dundee but there’s a special appearance by “The Fabulous” Jackie Fargo:

Next week, we will take a look back at last year’s Southern Heavyweight Classic where I met The King in the Finals for the coveted trophy.

Memphis Wildfire Wrestling’s Southern Heavyweight Classic takes place next Thursday night (Dec. 18th) at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, TN.  To purchase tickets online & for the full line-up click here.

Dundee issued the challenge to Lawler at last month’s BRAWL in the FALL.  The winner of their match will move on to the second round and will face the winner of Jeff Jarrett vs Brian Christopher.  Twelve men will enter the tournament – one man will be crowned the winner.

Throwback Thursday: Jeff Jarrett returns to Memphis

If you missed Memphis Wildfire Wrestling‘s latest event “BRAWL in the FALL”, you missed the return of one of the most successful superstars to ever start his wrestling career in Memphis –

“Double J” Jeff Jarrett.

Jarrett joined us on MSL and was very vague about whether he would appear at Minglewood Hall to answer Brian Christopher’s challenge.  However, he did say that Brian would be the first to know.

How about this for an answer?

The history runs deep with Jeff Jarrett & Brian Christopher, as they both started their professional wrestling careers in Memphis, TN.  A new chapter will be written on Thursday December 18th when the two square off in the first round of the Southern Heavyweight Classic, a tournament created based on the tradition of the Southern Heavyweight Championship.  Both men have held the Southern Heavyweight Championship on several occasions in the past.

Another historic rivalry will be renewed at the Southern Heavyweight Classic, as well.  Also in the first round, “Superstar” Bill Dundee has challenge Jerry “The King” Lawler – with the winner facing the winner of Jarrett vs Christopher in round two.

Twelve men will enter the tournament – only ONE will reign supreme as the Southern Heavyweight Classic Champion.  I am on the opposite side of the bracket… and hope to see any of the four men in the finals.

Next week on Throwback Thursday, we will take a deeper look into the greatest rivalry in Memphis Wrestling history – Jerry Lawler vs Bill Dundee.

Throwback Thursday: Memphis Wildfire Wrestling’s Force of July was a major success

The King introduces Scott Steiner to Memphis BBQ.

Memphis Wildfire Wrestling celebrated Independence Day with their annual event Force of July.  Over 500 fans jam-packed Minglewood Hall in Memphis, TN with hopes of seeing “fireworks” from The King.

They were not disappointed.

This week’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to last Thursday evening, July 10th, where Jerry “The King” Lawler squared off against former WCW World Heavyweight Champion “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner.  Also on the marquee was a match being billed as The Star Spangled Challenge, which pitted myself (Dustin Starr) along with the lovely Maria against “Superstar” Bill Dundee.

Steiner & Lawler, amazingly enough, had never wrestled against one another until Force of July.  The two had a war of words on various radio and television stations prior to their match-up.  As for Bill Dundee and myself, to say we had words would be an understatement.

First, let’s take a look at The Star Spangled Challenge between Dustin “FIVE” Starr with Maria & “Superstar” Bill Dundee in its entirety:

Maria & I discussed our feelings on how the match ended on MSL, last week.

Next, let’s take a look at the Main Event of the evening.  Jerry “The King” Lawler versus “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner:

One of the greatest compliments a wrestling audience can give to the performers is a chant of “This is Awesome!”

Anyone interested in seeing Dustin Starr & Maria vs Jerry Lawler and Lauryn?

For the full results and photos from the event, check out Wrestling News Center.  John Herrada & Derrick O’ Dell provided amazing photography for the event.

Fun Facts:  WWE Network was on-hand to film the event, as we reported a few weeks back.  Here’s a behind-the-scenes photo I posted on Twitter of the film crew interviewing Bill Dundee.

Memphis Wildfire Wrestling returns to Minglewood Hall tonight for their annual event Force of July.  Memphis Wrestling stars have made appearances on local television stations & radio programs over the course of the last few weeks, but none more exciting than yesterday’s appearance on Fox 13’s Good Morning Memphis.

With Memphis Wrestling returning to Channel 13 for the first time since 1977, this week’s Throwback Thursday features MSL’s friend & host of Good Morning Memphis Ernie Freeman.  Ernie plays the role of Lance Russell or Dave Brown, as Maria & I are interrupted by a fired-up “Superstar” Bill Dundee.

Dundee gives a short Channel 13 Memphis Wrestling history lesson, as he mentions wrestling there in 1975 with guys like Don & Al Greene, Jackie Fargo and Jerry Lawler.  Among all the commotion, Dundee even threatens to knock Ernie out!
