Throwback Thursday: Andy Kaufman & Jimmy Hart are out to get The King

Memphis Wrestling has been the starting point for some of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.  Along with that, we’ve seen some of the greatest wrestling managers of all time, as well.  For Memphis fans, it doesn’t get any bigger than Jimmy Hart and Andy Kaufman.

The two men were notorious for trying to dethrone The King.  At one time, their stable was the strongest in the territory as they brought in new faces to go head-on with Lawler.  We all know the history between Andy Kaufman, Jimmy Hart & Jerry Lawler – it has been well-documented.  But while I was searching for this week’s Throwback Thursday clip, I came across something that was just too gruesome not to share.

This week’s classic clip features WWE Hall of Famer “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart.  Hart is at the desk with Lance Russell to inform the world that his friend Andy Kaufman has found a new monster to face The King.  That monster is none other than Man Mountain Link… and you won’t believe what he does on live TV.

Yes, folks.  Man Mountain Link is eating a raw chicken!  How do I know?  I was fortunate enough to meet Man Mountain Link many years later and I witnessed him do this live!

Many competitors have made their way to the Mid-South Coliseum to face off with The King.  And Lawler, to his credit, has defeated them all.  On May 23rd in the parking lot of the Mid-South Coliseum, The King will do it once again.  Who will The King face at Roundhouse Revival?  For more information on Roundhouse Revival, click here.

Don’t Forget:  Memphis Wildfire Wrestling returns on April 23rd!  Catch all the action at Woodland Hills Country Club in Cordova, TN.  Already scheduled: Brian Christopher vs Derrick King, R&D vs Action Jackson and Dustin “FIVE” Starr with Maria vs “SUPERSTAR” Bill Dundee!  For the latest info, click here.

Throwback Thursday: Kings of the Coliseum

As announced on last week’s Cerrito Live, an event will take place on May 23rd called Roundhouse Revival.  Not only will the event feature pro wrestling, music, food trucks, craft brew and more – but it will be held in the parking lot of the historic Mid-South Coliseum.

Can you imagine a wrestling ring set up in the parking lot of the Coliseum?  Well, let’s just say Jerry “The King” Lawler and “Superstar” Bill Dundee, the two most iconic wrestling figures in Memphis, are already confirmed for the event.

As we prepare to “celebrate public land & city brand”, let’s take a look back at two of the arena’s greatest performers.  Both men have sold out the Coliseum & both are considered royalty.  Let’s rewind back to 1993 with Lawler, Elvis & his famous pink Cadillac.

Rumor has it, there was discussion of Lawler & the real Elvis partnering up for a wrestling storyline.  Unfortunately, that never happened.

Earlier this week, legendary Memphis Wrestling broadcaster Lance Russell celebrated his 89th Birthday.  From all of us at MemphiSport.com, we would like to wish Lance a very Happy Birthday with many more to come!

To help celebrate Lance’s Birthday, I’d like to take a look back at one of my personal favorite clips of Lancer himself.  This video is not only a Memphis Wrestling Classic, but it is an extremely rare find.

This week’s Throwback Thursday clip features Lance Russell like you’ve never seen him before.  Enjoy!

Lance is always golden – even when the roles are reversed.  Don’t forget to stop by Lance’s official Facebook page to send your Birthday wishes.  Big thanks to our friend Eddie for sharing this footage on Twitter.

ICYMI: Lance Russell joined MSL last year for one full hour to discuss classic Memphis Wrestling, his nickname “Banana Nose”, Mid-South Coliseum and so much more.  To listen in full, please click here.

Throwback Thursday: Reggie B. Fine puts his gold on the line

Memphis Wrestling has always been a little different.  Memphis was the first territory to have theme music for their wrestler’s entrances.  The wrestling style was even different than anywhere else.

Need proof?  Just watch this week’s clip.

I dug deep into the archives and found a funny one from 1991.  Reggie B. Fine wants a Championship match so bad, he put his gold on the line.  But not the gold you might be thinking of…

Reggie B. Fine is pure comedy gold.  He has always been one of my favorite Memphis Wrestling characters.  As usual, The King prevails against another pesky manager.

Top 5: Wrestling Night at FedExForum

When Grizzlies Live starts out like this, you know you’re in for a fun night at FedExForum.  As if the big OKC-Memphis rivalry wasn’t enough – Grizzlies tag teamed with pro wrestling to electrify The Grindhouse.  Maria & I were there, along with Kevin Cerrito to witness the action first-hand.

Now that the dust has settled, let’s take a look back at the top five takeaways from the event (in no particular order).

1.  16-time World Heavyweight Champion & 2-time WWE Hall of Famer “Nature Boy” Ric Flair made a surprise appearance with the Nature Bear – Grizz dressed as Flair!  Flair not only mentioned Kevin Durant on mic, but he hugged & rallied with Vince Carter & Z-Bo.

2.  Grizzlies featured live wrestling matches during the evening.  I competed in the pre-game match-up & Jerry “The King” Lawler was in action at half time.  The King successfully defended his newly crowned World Grizzlyweight Championship.

3.  The legendary Memphis Wrestling broadcast team of Lance Russell & Dave Brown hosted segments throughout the evening, building up to the big match at half time.  They provided play-by-play and fans were certainly happy to see the duo back in action.

5.  The first 3,000 fans received World Grizzlyweight Championship belts.  Fans began lining up as early as 3PM.  Doors do not open until 5PM… and tip off isn’t until 7PM.  To say this was the best giveaway in Grizzlies history would be an understatement.  (or am I biased?)

Throwback Thursday: Grizz don’t bluff

GrizzamaniaOur Memphis Grizzlies are no strangers to the squared circle.  Being known for arguably the best game operations crew in the NBA, they know all about the rich history of Memphis Wrestling.  Don’t believe me?  Show up on Saturday night (Jan. 31st) and see for yourself.

Memphis Grizzlies present Wrestling Night at FedExForum with the first 3,000 fans receiving their very own World Grizzlyweight Championship belt.  If you want to know just how sweet they really are, just ask The King.

Rumors have been circulating for weeks on what the Grizzlies have planned.  Not only have we heard that there will be a wrestling match, but legendary Memphis Wrestling broadcast team Lance Russell & Dave Brown will be there to call the action.  If that wasn’t enough, The King hinted at an appearance by 16-time World Heavyweight Champion “Nature Boy” Ric Flair.

No official word or confirmation has come from the Grizzlies, but I know one person in particular who is fired up – GRIZZ!

What better way to get ready for the big game… and big match then to take a look back at some of my favorite antics from Grizz  himself?

Last season, Grizz paid tribute to several of his favorite professional wrestlers.  He impersonated The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan & even the Ultimate Warrior.  But none were more memorable than this week’s clip!

Memphis Grizzlies vs OKC Thunder tips off at 7:00PM CST inside FedExForum this Saturday night (Jan. 31st).  For more on ticket information, click here.

Jerry Lawler has won two Southern Heavyweight Classic trophies, including the one held in January.

Tonight is the big night!  What better way to celebrate Throwback Thursday than to take a look back at the 4th Annual Southern Heavyweight Classic held in January of this year?  After all, it’s not every day you step in the ring with Jerry “The King” Lawler in the Main Event for a trophy based on so much Memphis Wrestling tradition.

Each year twelve men enter the tournament – one man prevails as winner and new Southern Heavyweight Classic Champion.  The guests for the evening were absolutely star-studded – the who’s who of Memphis Wrestling.  WWE Hall of Famer KoKo B. Ware, the legendary “Superstar” Bill Dundee and even Dave Brown were on hand at Minglewood Hall to see who would prevail at the end of the night.

Lawler and I had already defeated two other opponents before finally meeting at the end.  Take a look at the entire night’s highlights in this week’s clip – including the final minutes of the Main Event (21:19 mark).

Memphis Wildfire Wrestling’s Southern Heavyweight Classic takes place tonight (Dec. 18th) at Minglewood Hall in Memphis, TN.  Two feature bouts have been added to Round 1 of the tournament – Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee and “Grand Master Sexay” Brian Christopher vs. Jeff Jarrett.  The winner of each match will face the other in Round 2.
