The Kings make it 5 in a row

I thought I would not be able to say this all season. The Kings have now won 5 in a row! Seriously, I still can’t believe it. Two more wins last weekend.

Last Friday night at Landers Center the RiverKings continued their winning streak as they won their fourth game in a row as they edged the Huntsville Havoc 4-3.

David Wilson was steady between the pipes as he stopped 21 of 24 shots.

Then the Kings went on the road for a Sunday matchup with Columbus. This was a very close game but the RiverKings kept their winning streak alive as they squeaked by the Cottonmouths 2-1.

Kings netminder David Wilson was again steady between the pipes as he stopped 21 of 22 shots directed his way.

Up next for the Kings- Landers Center(formerly the DCC)- Saturday, January 28-The Fayetteville FireAntz are back in town…game time is 7:05pm. It’s Pack the House and National Wild Turkey Federation Jersey Night as the team will wear specially designed NWTF jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game.

Tuesday – the Surge come to town. Game time is 7:05pm- Landers Center(formerly the DCC)

 Joe Sports thoughts

What can I say? I can’t argue with five wins in a row. Believe it or not, I am the kind of person who focuses on the positive and for the Kings players this is positive.

I hope the last five victories is something the team will build on.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports

Kings win on road

Wonders never cease…The Kings have now won three games in a row on the road.

The Kings beat up on the FireAntz in Fayetteville last Friday night, beating them 5-2.

On Saturday in Fayetteville the Kings squeaked by the FireAntz 5-4 in overtime for their third straight victory.

The Kings other victory on the road was vs the Surge, the previous Sunday, edging them 3-2 in OT.

Here’s some news from the Kings this week.

The RiverKings announced that goaltender Scott Darling has been called up by the Wichita Thunder of the CHL. That hurts us big time.

The Kings also announced that the team has acquired forward Matt Whitehead and defenseman Tanner Hlookoff from the Fayetteville FireAntz in exchange for defenseman Chris Pontes. Terms and conditions were not released. Big moves Landmine…Big Moves.

The SPHL announced that Mark Magnowski of the RiverKings is the SBK Player of the Week for January 9-15. Good going Mark!!

News from the Past: The Kings announced Tuesday that forward Rob Sich has been removed from team suspension and subsequently released. Really !!

January 20, 2012 at 7:05 PM- Landers Center-formerly the DCC. Huntsville is in town. Then the Kings hit the road once again for a Sunday matchup with Columbus.

Joe Sports thoughts

Like I said last week, if there isn’t any changes from the top down, this season is history.

The only changes the Kings made this week was not blockbuster moves. Forward Matt Whitehead and defenseman Tanner Hlookoff from the Fayetteville FireAntz in exchange for defenseman Chris Pontes. Come on Landmine, what’s up with that?

I GUESS THE OWNER ISN’T LISTENING OR READING.

What did I say last week?

If no changes by NEXT Thursday(January 19th) then the message is clear. There truly is no accountability from those signing the paychecks.  There truly is no pride in the jersey. There truly is no hope.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

The Kings are staring spring in the face right now

Another week has gone by. How did last week go?  Same as every other week. One win –two defeats.

On Sunday the RiverKings won in overtime edging the Surge 3-2. The reason we won this one was  Scott Darling was outstanding between the pipes, he stopped 33 of 35 shots.

On Saturday the Kings COULDN’T PULL OFF AN OVERTIME WIN,the Huntsville Havoc edged us 4-3.

On Friday night the FireAntz beat us 5-4 in the toilet bowl.

The Antz netminder Mike Brown was unbelievable between the pipes, he stopped 39 of 43 shots directed his way.

Up next for the RiverKings…They are away this week for a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday night. They will be in Fayetteville. RiverKings vs FireAntz at 6:30. Both games will be aired on Sports 56 and America One.

Joe Sports thoughts…

The Kings’ are staring spring in the face right now.  So are their fans!  There’s so much to say and so little time.

A big part of the reason that the Kings’ are pretty much finished is because they can’t finish.  The Kings fire 10 thousand shots on goal and only score 3 goals. What they’re clearly lacking is a true “finisher”.  The coach’s job is to manage his assets.  He clearly hasn’t done that.

Two weeks notice:

If this team hits the ice next Friday(January 20th.) with the same staff in place, I will have truly given up all hope on this franchise under current ownership.

I really don’t want to see folks lose jobs but you just CANNOT permit this kind of performance without consequences. It just cannot happen. It can’t be tolerated.

Certainly not to the extent of 8 damn wins in 15 games!  I don’t think any of the other teams in this league wouldn’t have made a change by now.

Here are a few scenarios I would consider for a shakeup.  The ”  Trick”:

If no changes by NEXT Thursday(January 19th) then the message is clear. There truly is no accountability from those signing the paychecks.  There truly is no pride in the jersey.  There truly is no hope.

The playoffs and this season are a lost cause. But in the right hands, the rest of this season can be a vital tool towards making sure next season is not one.

If they reach 20 losses before they hit 11 wins I will consider that a magnificent feat.

The coach and general manager need to get the axe. There’s no way you can justify any of these people keeping their jobs.

Replace them with someone who can give it an identity from the ground up.

The way it is run right now isn’t working, and trying to pretend like it is or it will soon is just going to drive fans away.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

Sputtering Kings look to get back on track in 2012

Hope you all had a great Christmas and happy New Year.

On Friday, Dec. 23rd, the Kings doubled up on the Ice Gators 4-2 at the DCC. I got one of the things on my wish list early. A win.

But that was the end of the winning streak.

On Monday December 26th the Kings got spanked by Knoxville 5-1. Too much turkey in the Kings bellies, I expect.

On Tuesday December 27th, things did not get any better as Huntsville knocked off the Kings by a score of 5-3. Too much drink in the Kings bellies.

On Thursday the 29th of December Pensacola doubled up on the Kings 4-2. It takes a while for a Christmas hangover to go away. I’m just getting over mine now.

On Friday the 30th. The Ice Gators edged the Kings 3-2. See what did I tell you, it takes a while.

Saturday, New Years Eve, the Ice Gators did not show up at all, well they actually did, but not on their skates. Must have had too much bubbly after the win on Thursday. They were spanked by the Kings, yes you heard that right, they were spanked by the Kings 6-0.

It was a nice way to end the year. A win.YIPPIE !!

On Tuesday January the 3rd…YES YOU’RE HEARING IT RIGHT.

TWO WINS IN A ROW.

The Kings edged the SURGE 3-2 IN A SHOOT-OUT.

For the first time this season, Kings players actually got under the oppositions skin.

Now lets’ not get too excited, yes we have won two in a row, but folks, this is not a well coached hockey team. We got lucky Saturday, the Gators, were not even there. Tuesday, we won against a very weak Surge team in a shootout. But hey, I’ll take the two wins.

Joe Sports Thoughts…

Show me what you got Kings?

Sometimes all a team needs is a little effort, and things will turn around. Hopefully, that’s what happened Tuesday for the Kings.

I’ll give credit when credit is due. The effort was there on Tuesday. The Kings worked hard against the Surge. They were much more gritty, physical and active everywhere on the ice while giving the Surge few opportunities on our goal. The Surge only had 19 shots.

However, the problem, the Kings have is that they are pathetic on the power play. Again we were 0-for-5.

The team had FIVE power play chances on Tuesday, but all five of them were forgettable. The Kings’ power play unit has no rhythm or fluidity, and the Surge easily killed all five opportunities.

I think the Kings’ problems are becoming clearer now. It’s not that the team isn’t working hard, but instead there’s little chemistry on the roster. They can’t figure out the coach and that is where the chemistry has to come from. I’m not sure if that will change as the season moves forward, but I have to believe the owner will eventually figure it out.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

My fav night at the DCC is this weekend, It’s Elvis night, Elvis Jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. Tickets for Elvis night start at just $8. “Oh honey can you get out my Elvis suit and sideburns.”

Now, I know I’ll get slapped on the hands for this, but Friday night, lets’ just call this one the Toilet Bowl.

The FireAntz are in town. Two bottom feeders going at it. Lets’ thank someone, at least it’s Elvis night.

The Kings are 7-14-2 for 16 points and the Antz are 7-17-2 for 16 points. Should be a barn burner. Make sure you have your designated driver for this tilt.

The Kings are then going on the road as they are in Huntsville, Alabama on Saturday and they then take on the Surge in Biloxi,MS on Sunday.

All I want for Christmas is a win

This year, the feeling of Christmas is getting to me. Maybe it’s the twinkling lights on the tree. Maybe it’s the hustle and bustle of the shopping centers.

We all want that special gift under the tree. The questions is, do you deserve it ?

My Wish List…

How about a new car: Not really 100% necessary now, but hey, this is a wish list right? Don’t know how much longer the old ’77 Ford Granada’s going to hold out.

How about a new laptop, in case you were wondering, honey — it isn’t going to last forever.

A new phone… do you know how infuriating it is to see so many people using their iphones with Skype and taking cool screenshots and I’m stuck with my dumb original cell? It’s just plain embarrassing walking around with this  thing.

How about a clean house.  I don’t want a cleaning service. I kind of have issues with people coming into my house. Just a clean house will do, thank you. Can’t show you pictures of that.

The new 80” flat screen tv, awesome man, can you imagine watching Brady and the Pats.

Enough with the kidding around…

I just want to wish everyone and your entire families a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season. May 2012 bring health and prosperity. A few wins for the Kings are welcome as well!

All the best.

Joe Sports

Now to the serious stuff…

Let’s just say it, the Kings are not good. This team is ground chuck to the Riverhawks T-Bone steak.

Are we going to get any help from the hockey Gods.  No I don’t think so, we could use help from the owner.

Last weekend was ???

The RiverKings were edged by the Augusta Riverhawks 3-2 on Friday night at the James Brown Arena.

http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/boxscore.html?gameid=1674157

Saturday didn’t turn out much better, the Kings were beaten again by the Hawks 4-2 in Augusta.

http://www.pointstreak.com/prostats/boxscore.html?gameid=1674161

Hilariously enough, there just aren’t words to express what this season’s Kings are. Schizophrenic could be used.

Frustration has set in for the Kings faithful.

The Kings put on a half #@##@ performance against Augusta last weekend. It was gross, frankly.

The Kings were listless, lazy and just plain slow last weekend. No jump in their step. Seriously I could go on and on. But like I said last week, it’s not the players, it’s the coach, this team has no game plan. Last week’s games had zero intensity.

No powerplay, a leaky PK, just pathetic.

The games were slow, dull and excruciating to watch.(Did I spell that right?)

This season is going to be a long one. It ends at the end of the regular season. Unless???

Joe Sports thoughts…

Even when the Kings are playing well (now come on, they play well for about 15-20 minutes of a 60 minute game). In those 15-20 minutes I honestly believe it’s the opposition playing bad making the Kings look good.

What can we do?

I know, we are not going to fire anybody, just blame it on the players.

Maybe watch a video of Don Cherry’s rock em sock em hockey.

It is tough watching your team lose like this? – Definitely I don’t see things getting a lot better.

Again, my sense is the players have ceased buying (if they ever did) into Landmines theory on how to play the game.

After arriving home from the Spot last weekend, I went into the TV room at home around 1:15 am and started sipping a cold one.

I thought to myself Scotty Bowman or Toe Blake could squeeze Ws out of this lineup. I knew at that point , I had enough pops.

All I want for Christmas is a win!

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

Last week I got a lot of emails about my Quote “ This team is in Stinko-mode.”

Ok, I take that back, hockey fans. They are in Stinko-Stinko-mode.

That was the main topic of the emails I got, not one person questioned me about letting the coach and general manager go. The fans have spoken.

Standings – We are dead last.

Kings Notes:

Kings’s Mark Magnowski  was called upto the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League.

Sich is gonso!!

Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL have signed Sich. Now, was he let go by the Kings? Haven’t heard anything from the Kings office. But that  isn’t  strange, I get more of my info from friends and hockey forums. I know the Wings are desperate for players(callups, injuries)

Have a great Christmas and Holiday season. See you at the game on Friday.

Something’s gotta give

I’ve watched some stinkers the last couple of years, but last weekend’s games takes the prize.

The Kings lossed in overtime to Knoxville on Friday night at the Desoto Civic Center, 4-3. They were then spanked on Saturday night 4-1 by the same Bears.

Last weekend I was mad as a hornet with the inept, lacklustre, p-poor effort by the Kings. I’m still ticked and it has been 6 sleeps since Saturday’s game, you would have thunk the sleeps would have calmed me down.

After pondering the situation of last weekend and the games I have witnessed this season.

What is going on?

This team is in El- Stinko-mode.

The hammer must fall, the GM SHOULD GET HIS WALKING PAPERS AND SO SHOULD THE COACH. Just a thought!!!!!!

It is time for coach to go. The team has quit on him. There’s no doubt in my mind. It may not be the best team on paper, but they are better than they’ve been playing.

The D is more like DOA.

The coach has to go, no matter what ! Too much line juggling. Too much experimenting. Wrong guys out for PP. No emotion, the players are not motivated at all. Geez, the fans can see it from their seats, I can.

Joe Sports thoughts…

Last weekend’s games were pathetic…completely pathetic…

Landmine is in the land of the lost right now. Hey it’s not his fault, he didn’t know he couldn’t coach, not all hockey players can coach and it doesn’t matter what level. They just can’t do it.

If it was up to me I would clean house…fire both the GM and the coach.

But I know that is taking it way too far and is too much to hope for. Hey the owner is rich and I don’t think cares. If she cares about the fans, do something now!

Seriously folks, you know it and I know it, we can see it, the players look lost.

There’s no gameplan or strategy.

To correct this:

You need a new coach – a motivator and communicator, a young man with whom the players can identify and respect. The players game in and game out demonstrate they are not paying any attention to Landmesser. Hmm, I saw Marge at the gym the other day.

Something’s gotta give!!!!!!!!

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

Talent is a gift from God, but you only succeed with hard work.” ~ Jean Beliveau

The RiverKings record is 4-8-1 on the season.

What’s up next for the Kings

Ouch and double Ouch.

The RiverKings play their next two games on the road against the 1st place Augusta Riverhawks on Friday and Saturday.

Sports 56 will have all the action, America One will have it on your screen. The Spot in Hernando will have the Away Game Party. Could get ugly, so remember have a designated driver. I’ll be there pounding them back with you.

Kings Notes:

The RiverKings acquired forward Jeff Topilko from the Pensacola Ice Flyers for future considerations. Terms and conditions were not released.

The SPHL announced Tuesday that it suspended Sich for three games. Sich’s suspension started last Saturday when he sat out the Ice Bears’ 4-1 victory at the RiverKings. Sich will also miss games Friday and Saturday against first-place Augusta.

What RiverKings team is going to show up?

Well that certainly was a successful weekend last week. Five points out of a possible six. Gotta love it.

Whats on tap this weekend.

Three games again.

The RiverKings are in Louisiana tonight, game time is 7:05 p.m.

The RiverKings will have their Away Game Party tonight at The Spot in Hernando.

Game Day

 Some familiar faces

You will see some familiar faces at the DCC Saturday night.

Coach Kevin Kaminski, David Simoes and netminder Kevin Beech.

Joe Sports thoughts:

The Kings were offensively challenged for most of November.

GOALTENDING – we have not seen a goaltending clinic between the pipes. Last weekend was our best weekend for our netminders.

SPECIAL TEAMS – we have to get the powerplay going.

Chemistry- this team seems to lack Chemistry.

Being successful in this league , isn’t just about stacking your team, it’s about work ethic. This team was looking like they had no work ethic.

Last weekend, the Kings were a different team. They actually showed up and played some good hockey.

The thing I’m worried about this weekend. What team is going to show up?

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

Big weekend for Kings

Well finally hockey is back. It seemed like the Kings just disappeared. I’m so full of turkey, I’m going to bust.

It’s a big test for the Kings this weekend. First they have to play three games in three days. Second, they will get ripped by me after the three games if they don’t start playing some good hockey.

Your Mississippi RiverKings SIT AT THE BOTTOM.(2-4-0).

Lets get at it: Mississippi is in Knoxville, tonight, Starting time for tonights game is 6:35 p.m.

Saturday: A rematch against the Bears at the DeSoto Civic Center, 7:05 p.m.

Sunday: Columbus is in town and that game goes at the DCC, the starting time for that one is 3:05 p.m.

A few trades this past week. Coach Derek Landmesser made two trades.

The Kings’ picked up goalkeeper David Wilson from Augusta. Get this he was traded to the Mississippi RiverKings for cash. (I didn’t think we had any cash) Plus we got defenseman Chris Pontes from Pensacola. Kings Ryan Ramage got the axe and now he is in Pensacola.

Deven Stillar has signed a 3 game tryout with the Kings. He played one game with the Bucks of the CHL this season.

He plays right wing, and he didn’t have bad numbers in junior hockey. 65 points last year with the Flin Flon Bombers, the year before that 56pts. with Fin Flon and 52pts. the year before that with the Melfort Mustangs. Those three teams are in the SJHL. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in Canada. Good luck to him !!

Away game watch party, tonight at the Spot in Hernando. The party begins at 6:35 p.m.

Joe Sports thoughts on this triple header coming up:

The Kings have to at least get four points this weekend. Hey we only have to win two of three.

As I said at the beginning of the season, I would give this edition of the Kings 7 games. They got lucky, because now I’m giving them the weekend also. 9 games total. I will have my report card  ON THIS TEAM next week.

Games: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9- The Kings are 2-4.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.

Kings sit at the bottom

Well, I’m a little late with my report on the Kings this week. I was away on business and just got back.

Last Friday, the Kings earned their second win of the season, with a 3-2 win in overtime.

A penalty shot for the Kings in OT, NEVER SEEN THAT ONE BEFORE, but I’ll take the two points. The SPHL rule book says that in the final two minutes of overtime, any minor penalty results in an automatic penalty shot.(What a stupid rule, don’t ya think?)

 Havoc over Kings

Tuesday

The Huntsville Havoc’s were way too much for the Kings on Tuesday morning as they beat up on the home team, winning 5-2.

The RiverKings’ powerplay was 1 for 6, but Huntsville made good on their powerplay chances as they were 3 for 6.

Kings netminder Scott Darling had a rough morning he stopped 22 of 27 shots.  Not a good outing for Darling.

Huntsville netminder Sibbald was hot between the pipes as he stopped 19 of 21 shots.

The RiverKings are off until Friday, November 26, they’ll then be off to Knoxville to do battle with the Ice Bears.

The Kings next home game is Saturday, November 27 against the same Ice Bears.

Still waiting

Joe Sports thoughts:

The Kings had two winnable games this past week. We were lucky to even win one of the two.

It’s time for Derek Landmesser to light the fire of desire under some players’ seats.

But, then again, is he the right coach for this team?

Does this team have any depth?

Games: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7- That’s when I give you my evaluation of this team. The Kings are 2-4.

Kings suffer third loss in a row

The Mississippi RiverKings were spanked (blanked)(shutout) by the Mississippi Surge 3-0 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum last Friday.

The Surge wasted no time as they scored at 5:53 of the first period. Surges’ Adam Krug found the twine behind Kings returning netminder Darling.

The only positive thing that came out of the first period for the Kings was: They outshot the Surge 14-5. It was 1-0 Surge after twenty minutes.

Just like the first period the Surge again wasted no time to pop in another goal on Darling.

Forty-five seconds to be exact.

It was a powerplay goal. Versteeg-Lytwyn scored for the Mississippi Surge.

The RiverKings again outshot the Surge 7-4 in the second period, but could not solve Surge netminder Nick Eno. It was 2-0 after forty minutes of play.

In the third period the RiverKings had a number of chances including a five minute major power play but could not get one by Eno.

Surge forward Campbell put the nail in the coffin (icing on the cake) at 19:20 of the third. The final, 3-0 Surge.

The RiverKings outshot the Surge 31-17.

Surge netminder, Nick Eno was outstanding between the pipes as he stopped all 31 shots directed his way.

Joe Sports thoughts…

The RiverKings are now 1-3 in this early season.

0-for-9-0-for-9

The Kings went 0 for 9 on the powerplay. What can I say?

The powerplay suffered again, going 0-for-9 and squandering away  a  5 minute major.

Our powerplay just looks non-existent. They had lots of trouble on offense, from non-functional  special teams to slumping snipers.

That’s the way I see it and I’m Joe Sports.
