Throwback Thursday: National Dog Day

As many of you know, yesterday was National Dog Day.  We couldn’t scroll through a social media channel without seeing images of dogs to celebrate the social holiday.  There were nearly 5 million posts on Instagram alone with the hashtag – #NationalDogDay.

Naturally, being a wrestling fan from Memphis – I had a few other dogs on my mind.

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, I not only do I have a classic clip to share – but I have a bonus clip, as well.  The first comes to us from September 21st, 1992 inside Mid-South Coliseum.  The late, great Junkyard Dog was crowned USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion with a victory of “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert.

JYD will always be remember as one of the greatest “dogs” of all time.  But National Dog Day couldn’t go on without mentioning my friend and Memphis Wrestling legend Moondog Spot.  For those of you who think Moondog Spot was only big in Memphis – here’s a bonus clip from February 15th, 1987 where he squared off against King Harley Race on WWF Wrestling Challenge.

I’ll be joining Kevin Cerrito this Saturday to find out who his favorite “dog” of all-time is, as well as recapping the biggest party of the summer – Summer Slam.  Cerrito Live airs every Saturday from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm CT on on Sports 56 & 87.7 FM .

Delta Fair:  Memphis Wild Fire Wrestling will be live at the Delta Fair on September 5th & 6th with wrestling shows at 1PM & 5PM each day.  Wrestling will take place indoors at Agricenter Memphis and will be a part of the fair admission.

Scheduled to appear:  Jerry “The King” Lawler, “Superstar” Bill Dundee, Derrick King & of course the Power Couple – Dustin Starr & Maria.  For more info, click here.

Don’t forget:  Pro Wrestling Trivia with Kevin Cerrito is back at The Green Beetle on September 10th at 8PM .  Test your knowledge against other wrestling fans to see if you have what it takes to bring home the title!  Also, dress as your favorite wrestler and win a prize in the Costume Contest!  View the official event invite here.

Throwback Thursday: Dave Brown Says Goodbye

Earlier this week, WMC Action News 5 announced that Dave Brown will retire as Chief Meteorologist on August 31st, 2015.  Dave served the Mid-South as Chief Meteorologist since 1977.  To say he will be missed would be an understatement.

As good of a weatherman as Dave was, many would argue that he was an even better wrestling announcer.  Dave hosted Memphis Wrestling from 1967 to 2002.  For 25 of those years, he co-hosted with the legendary Lance Russell.  Many have called this duo the greatest broadcast team of all time.

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, let’s take you back to “Memphis Wrestling Memories” with both Lance and Dave.  WMC aired this special just last year (2014) – but Lance and Dave talk us thru many great Memphis Wrestling classics.

Lance Russell will join us on Cerrito Live this Saturday to discuss Dave’s retirement.  I’m sure Lance will have a few stories to share about Dave Brown “The Weather Clown”, as well.  Along with Lance, Joe Cronin will join us to breakdown this Sunday’s WWE Summer Slam.

Cerrito Live airs every Saturday from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm CT on on Sports 56 & 87.7 FM .

Oman Arena, Jackson, TN:  Catch Lance & Dave together on Saturday October 24th at Oman Arena.  Also scheduled for the Main Event – Jerry Lawler vs Terry Funk.

Throwback Thursday: Remembering The American Dream

Dusty-RhodesJune 11th, 2015 was a sad, sad day for wrestling fans around the world.  We unexpectedly lost one of the greatest performers of all time.

So today on Throwback Thursday, we remember “The American Dream”.

Let’s go all the way back to 1977.  Dusty Rhodes was set to make an appearance in Memphis, TN.  Here’s footage of the interview leading up to his big match with The King!

Certainly one of the very best promo men the wrestling business has ever seen.  Dusty Rhodes captivated an audience with his charisma, style and showmanship.  He could talk you into the building, by himself.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with Dusty Rhodes in 2010, while I was under contract with WWE.  You always knew when he was in the room.  He was so respected, you could feel it.  I remember always wanting to do my very best for him, no matter what.

Quick story:  As he taught promo class one morning, Dream asked me to stand up and share a story with everyone.  I had told him previously that my parents named me after Dusty Rhodes himself.  I was known as Dusty all throughout my childhood.  He was proud of that and had me share it with the crew.

“The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes – you will be missed.

Fact:  In 2010, Dusty Rhodes tagged up with his sons Goldust & Cody Rhodes to face off against The Dude Busters & Curt Hawkins in a six-man tag team match.  I was there and witnessed it live.  Dream received a standing ovation from the locker room afterward.  That was Dusty Rhodes’ last match.

Next week:  We will take a look back at the late “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel.

Throwback Thursday: Classic USWA tag team wrestling

This week, I have a clip that features two WWE trainers, a Superstar, and one of the biggest names in pro wrestling history all in one tag team match.  Looking back 25 years ago, this footage is golden.

“Superstar” Bill Dundee & Steve Keirn vs Steve Austin & Tom Prichard – and if that isn’t good enough for you – the late Tojo Yamamoto is ringside causing trouble.  Enjoy!

Speaking of “Superstar” Bill Dundee – I have one more clip I would like to share on Throwback Thursday.  Only this time, we go back just one week ago to Memphis Wildfire Wrestling‘s RETURN of the BURN.  Maria & I went head to head with Bill Dundee in the main event at Woodland Hills Event Center.  Things got a little out of hand in the end!

Don’t miss Memphis Wildfire Wrestling‘s Memphis in Mayhem at Woodland Hills Event Center on May 28th.  For more details, click here.

Fun Fact:  Steve Keirn and Tom Prichard have both been trainers for World Wrestling Entertainment.  Prichard is a former WWE Tag Team Champion, while Keirn was one half of The Fabulous Ones.

Throwback Thursday: Handsome Jimbo calling into Mempho

The headline says it all – WWE Hall of Famer and Memphis Wrestling legend “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant will be our special guest on Cerrito Live, Saturday afternoon.  This will be the first time we have “Handsome” Jimmy on-air with us and it is sure to be an exciting call. No one in the history of Memphis Wrestling has had more glitz, glamour, enthusiasm and fanfare than the “boy from New York City.”  Even before his time in Memphis, “Handsome” Jimmy & “Luscious” Johnny – The Valiant Brothers set the WWWF on fire by capturing the World Tag Team Championships. Let’s take a look back at the historic career of not only “Handsome” Jimbo – but The Valiant Brothers as a Hall of Fame tag team. We are looking forward to speaking with “Handsome” Jimmy about a number of topics, including his thoughts on our historic Mid-South Coliseum, Roundhouse Revival event on May 23rd, and the upcoming Memphis Wildfire Wrestling event on April 23rd – Return of the Burn. Speaking of Wildfire Wrestling, I have one more clip to share.  This one comes from September 18th, 2014 at Long Live The King.  Maria & I had the honor of interviewing “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant in a segment we call The Five Starr Showcase.  Unfortunately for Valiant, things didn’t go too well for him.  I’m sure he will have something to say about this on Saturday. Along with the exclusive interview with “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant, you will have your chance to win FREE Memphis Wildfire Wrestling tickets.  Be sure to listen live! Cerrito Live airs every Saturday from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm CT on on Sports 56 & 87.7 FM .  If you have any questions you’d like to discuss with “Handsome” Jimmy, feel free to post them here or send them via Twitter @MemphiSport.  Also, be sure to find Jimmy Valiant on Facebook. Throwback Thursday: Kings of the Coliseum

As announced on last week’s Cerrito Live, an event will take place on May 23rd called Roundhouse Revival.  Not only will the event feature pro wrestling, music, food trucks, craft brew and more – but it will be held in the parking lot of the historic Mid-South Coliseum.

Can you imagine a wrestling ring set up in the parking lot of the Coliseum?  Well, let’s just say Jerry “The King” Lawler and “Superstar” Bill Dundee, the two most iconic wrestling figures in Memphis, are already confirmed for the event.

As we prepare to “celebrate public land & city brand”, let’s take a look back at two of the arena’s greatest performers.  Both men have sold out the Coliseum & both are considered royalty.  Let’s rewind back to 1993 with Lawler, Elvis & his famous pink Cadillac.

Rumor has it, there was discussion of Lawler & the real Elvis partnering up for a wrestling storyline.  Unfortunately, that never happened.

Earlier this week, legendary Memphis Wrestling broadcaster Lance Russell celebrated his 89th Birthday.  From all of us at MemphiSport.com, we would like to wish Lance a very Happy Birthday with many more to come!

To help celebrate Lance’s Birthday, I’d like to take a look back at one of my personal favorite clips of Lancer himself.  This video is not only a Memphis Wrestling Classic, but it is an extremely rare find.

This week’s Throwback Thursday clip features Lance Russell like you’ve never seen him before.  Enjoy!

Lance is always golden – even when the roles are reversed.  Don’t forget to stop by Lance’s official Facebook page to send your Birthday wishes.  Big thanks to our friend Eddie for sharing this footage on Twitter.

Throwback Thursday: Reggie B. Fine puts his gold on the line

Memphis Wrestling has always been a little different.  Memphis was the first territory to have theme music for their wrestler’s entrances.  The wrestling style was even different than anywhere else.

Need proof?  Just watch this week’s clip.

I dug deep into the archives and found a funny one from 1991.  Reggie B. Fine wants a Championship match so bad, he put his gold on the line.  But not the gold you might be thinking of…

Reggie B. Fine is pure comedy gold.  He has always been one of my favorite Memphis Wrestling characters.  As usual, The King prevails against another pesky manager.

Just Announced:  Memphis Wildfire Wrestling returns on April 23rd!  Catch all the action at Woodland Hills Country Club in Cordova, TN.  For the latest info, click here.

Throwback Thursday: Sting returns to Memphis

Warrior Sting

Ultimate Warrior & Sting –   Memphis Wrestling 1985.

This Sunday night (Feb. 22nd) World Wrestling Entertainment debuts it’s Fast Lane pay-per-view at FedExForum in Memphis, TN.  The event is loaded with WrestleMania hanging in the balance.  It also looks like Memphis will be well-represented throughout the evening.

Daniel Bryan is certainly no stranger to Memphis.  He squares off with Roman Reigns for an opportunity to headline WrestleMania against WWE Champion Brock Lesnar.  Lesnar’s advocate, Paul Heyman, spent his early years in Memphis, as well.  Kane, Big Show & Joey (of J&J Security) have all passed through Memphis on their way to WWE fame.  Let’s not forget The King on commentary – Fast Lane is shaping up to be a Memphis Wrestling reunion!

WWE is also promising a face to face showdown between Triple H & Sting.  But did you know that even the Stinger started right here in Memphis?  He also had an “ultimate” tag team partner.

This week’s Throwback Thursday clip features the tag team of Ultimate Warrior & Sting – collectively known as The Blade Runners.

As an extra added value to this week’s clip, Blade Runners were managed by “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert.  Yesterday marked the 20 year anniversary of Gilbert’s untimely death.

Are you going to Fast Lane?  Share your photos with us on Twitter by sending them to @MemphiSport or @DustinStarr.  I will be live tweeting from FedExForum during Fast Lane.

Fun Facts:  This is not the first time WWE has debuted a new pay-per-view in Memphis, TN.  On Valentine’s Day 1999, WWE debuted St. Valentine’s Day Massacre at The Pyramid.

Trivia:  Which Superstar debuted for WWE on that night?
