Throwback Thursday: Wrestling Trivia Tonight!

kamala_kimcheeWhat better day than Throwback Thursday to have Pro Wrestling Trivia with Kevin Cerrito?  Belltime is at 8PM tonight at The Green Beetle.

Kevin billed it as “trivia too big for WrestleMania.”  He could be right because there’s no telling what we will see in tonight’s Costume Contest!  That’s right – dress as your favorite wrestler!

Prizes include Lucha Libre tickets for September 19th in Memphis, Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame T-shirts and more.  View the official invite here.

This week’s classic clip comes with a trivia question of its own.  Who played the role of Kamala’s manager Kim Chee?  I’ll leave you with footage from the Ugandan Giant Kamala at the Mid-South Coliseum.

Throwback Thursday: National Dog Day

As many of you know, yesterday was National Dog Day.  We couldn’t scroll through a social media channel without seeing images of dogs to celebrate the social holiday.  There were nearly 5 million posts on Instagram alone with the hashtag – #NationalDogDay.

Naturally, being a wrestling fan from Memphis – I had a few other dogs on my mind.

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, I not only do I have a classic clip to share – but I have a bonus clip, as well.  The first comes to us from September 21st, 1992 inside Mid-South Coliseum.  The late, great Junkyard Dog was crowned USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion with a victory of “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert.

JYD will always be remember as one of the greatest “dogs” of all time.  But National Dog Day couldn’t go on without mentioning my friend and Memphis Wrestling legend Moondog Spot.  For those of you who think Moondog Spot was only big in Memphis – here’s a bonus clip from February 15th, 1987 where he squared off against King Harley Race on WWF Wrestling Challenge.

I’ll be joining Kevin Cerrito this Saturday to find out who his favorite “dog” of all-time is, as well as recapping the biggest party of the summer – Summer Slam.  Cerrito Live airs every Saturday from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm CT on on Sports 56 & 87.7 FM .

Delta Fair:  Memphis Wild Fire Wrestling will be live at the Delta Fair on September 5th & 6th with wrestling shows at 1PM & 5PM each day.  Wrestling will take place indoors at Agricenter Memphis and will be a part of the fair admission.

Scheduled to appear:  Jerry “The King” Lawler, “Superstar” Bill Dundee, Derrick King & of course the Power Couple – Dustin Starr & Maria.  For more info, click here.

Don’t forget:  Pro Wrestling Trivia with Kevin Cerrito is back at The Green Beetle on September 10th at 8PM .  Test your knowledge against other wrestling fans to see if you have what it takes to bring home the title!  Also, dress as your favorite wrestler and win a prize in the Costume Contest!  View the official event invite here.

Throwback Thursday: Dave Brown Says Goodbye

Earlier this week, WMC Action News 5 announced that Dave Brown will retire as Chief Meteorologist on August 31st, 2015.  Dave served the Mid-South as Chief Meteorologist since 1977.  To say he will be missed would be an understatement.

As good of a weatherman as Dave was, many would argue that he was an even better wrestling announcer.  Dave hosted Memphis Wrestling from 1967 to 2002.  For 25 of those years, he co-hosted with the legendary Lance Russell.  Many have called this duo the greatest broadcast team of all time.

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, let’s take you back to “Memphis Wrestling Memories” with both Lance and Dave.  WMC aired this special just last year (2014) – but Lance and Dave talk us thru many great Memphis Wrestling classics.

Lance Russell will join us on Cerrito Live this Saturday to discuss Dave’s retirement.  I’m sure Lance will have a few stories to share about Dave Brown “The Weather Clown”, as well.  Along with Lance, Joe Cronin will join us to breakdown this Sunday’s WWE Summer Slam.

Cerrito Live airs every Saturday from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm CT on on Sports 56 & 87.7 FM .

Oman Arena, Jackson, TN:  Catch Lance & Dave together on Saturday October 24th at Oman Arena.  Also scheduled for the Main Event – Jerry Lawler vs Terry Funk.

Memphis Wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant celebrates his 73rd Birthday today.  On behalf of everyone at MemphiSport.com – we wish “The Boogie Woogie Man” a very Happy Birthday!

With it being Handsome Jimbo’s Birthday and all – why not take a look at some ole Jimmy Valiant footage for this week’s Throwback Thursday?

This week’s clip reminds us all just how cool and before his time “Handsome” Jimmy really was.  The charismatic promo man proved that he could not only wrestle and talk trash – but he could rock ‘n roll too!  Check this out from 1978.

Remember when Maria attempted to slap “Handsome” Jimmy?  Mercy, daddy!

Throwback Thursday: Remembering “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel

Last week, we celebrated the life and career of one of the most charismatic World Heavyweight Champions of all time – “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes.  This week, we will remember another legend who left his mark on Memphis Wrestling.  On June 22nd, we lost “The Nature Boy” Buddy Landel.

Although Buddy Landel may be more well-known for his time spent in WCW and WWF, today we will take a look at some of his finest work in Memphis.

This week’s Throwback Thursday clips features one of the most memorable moments in Memphis Wrestling history.  Funny enough, it involves the legendary “Superstar” Bill Dundee, as well.  Dundee & Landel, as a team, took over the hosting duties on the March 29, 1986 episode of Memphis Wrestling.  That was nearly 30 years ago – and it’s still television gold today.

I had the opportunity to work with Buddy Landel early in my career.  Landel was very well-respected in the locker room.  During the time I was around him, he was performing speaking engagements at youth groups and sharing his story to help make a difference.  I am very sorry to hear of his passing.

Fact:  Have you ever wondered how Buddy Landel was able to use the nickname “Nature Boy?” At one time, Landel was being groomed for a major feud with World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair – whom is also known as “Nature Boy.”  The feud never took off but the two did have a match in 1990 on WCW TV.

THIS Saturday Night:  Maria & I will be celebrating 4th of July in Jonesboro, AR at their annual 4th in the Forest.  We are fully stocked with Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame t-shirts & brand new Power Couple 8×10 photos – we hope to see you there!  For more information, click here.

Throwback Thursday: Remembering The American Dream

Dusty-RhodesJune 11th, 2015 was a sad, sad day for wrestling fans around the world.  We unexpectedly lost one of the greatest performers of all time.

So today on Throwback Thursday, we remember “The American Dream”.

Let’s go all the way back to 1977.  Dusty Rhodes was set to make an appearance in Memphis, TN.  Here’s footage of the interview leading up to his big match with The King!

Certainly one of the very best promo men the wrestling business has ever seen.  Dusty Rhodes captivated an audience with his charisma, style and showmanship.  He could talk you into the building, by himself.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with Dusty Rhodes in 2010, while I was under contract with WWE.  You always knew when he was in the room.  He was so respected, you could feel it.  I remember always wanting to do my very best for him, no matter what.

Quick story:  As he taught promo class one morning, Dream asked me to stand up and share a story with everyone.  I had told him previously that my parents named me after Dusty Rhodes himself.  I was known as Dusty all throughout my childhood.  He was proud of that and had me share it with the crew.

“The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes – you will be missed.

Fact:  In 2010, Dusty Rhodes tagged up with his sons Goldust & Cody Rhodes to face off against The Dude Busters & Curt Hawkins in a six-man tag team match.  I was there and witnessed it live.  Dream received a standing ovation from the locker room afterward.  That was Dusty Rhodes’ last match.

Next week:  We will take a look back at the late “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel.

Throwback Thursday: Masterlock Challenge

GlobalForceGrandSlamGlobal Force Wrestling officially launches their first ever Grand Slam Tour tomorrow night in Jackson, TN at Jackson General Ballpark.  Along with Jeff Jarrett and Jim Cornette, the event will feature a few names very familiar to the wrestling world.

One being my opponent – “The Adonis” Chris Mordetzsky.

Mordetzsky, formerly known in WWE as “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters, is also no stranger to the Mid-South and its wrestling stars.  As you’ll see in this week’s Throwback Thursday clip, Mordetzsky and I have a lot in common…

Although we both have had our run-ins with The King, there’s one thing for sure – I’m strong enough to break the Masterlock.

Throwback Thursday: Jeff Jarrett set for Cerrito Live

The debut of Global Force Wrestling in the United States is right around the corner.  GFW Grand Slam Tour makes it first stop in Jackson, TN on June 12 at The Ballpark at Jackson – home of the Jackson Generals minor league baseball team.  The event is the first of many, as GFW makes its way to The Orleans in Las Vegas on July 24th.  Joining us this Saturday on Cerrito Live to give us all the latest details is none other than the founder of GFW and former multiple-time World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett.

But before we speak to Jarrett on Saturday, let’s take a look back at one of his finest moments for this week’s Throwback Thursday.

In 2008, Jeff Jarrett shocked the world when he appeared in Tokyo, Japan to spoil Hulk Hogan’s press conference.  The presser was held after a hard fought match for New Japan Pro Wrestling, inside the Tokyo Dome.  Let’s take a look.

Jarrett and company will attempt to shock the world again, as Global Force Wrestling kicks off their first tour next week.  Where better to start than just 45 minutes away from Memphis, in Jackson, TN?

Cerrito Live airs every Saturday from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm CT on on Sports 56 & 87.7 FM .  If you have any questions you’d like to discuss with Jeff, feel free to post them here or send them via Twitter @MemphiSport.  Also, be sure to follow Jeff Jarrett Global Force Wrestling on Twitter.

Throwback Thursday: Classic USWA tag team wrestling

This week, I have a clip that features two WWE trainers, a Superstar, and one of the biggest names in pro wrestling history all in one tag team match.  Looking back 25 years ago, this footage is golden.

“Superstar” Bill Dundee & Steve Keirn vs Steve Austin & Tom Prichard – and if that isn’t good enough for you – the late Tojo Yamamoto is ringside causing trouble.  Enjoy!

Speaking of “Superstar” Bill Dundee – I have one more clip I would like to share on Throwback Thursday.  Only this time, we go back just one week ago to Memphis Wildfire Wrestling‘s RETURN of the BURN.  Maria & I went head to head with Bill Dundee in the main event at Woodland Hills Event Center.  Things got a little out of hand in the end!

Don’t miss Memphis Wildfire Wrestling‘s Memphis in Mayhem at Woodland Hills Event Center on May 28th.  For more details, click here.

Fun Fact:  Steve Keirn and Tom Prichard have both been trainers for World Wrestling Entertainment.  Prichard is a former WWE Tag Team Champion, while Keirn was one half of The Fabulous Ones.
